Just to make a point, how many times did you see Mariota throw the ball away instead of taking a sack ?

You can’t just use QB hits to evaluate this. Marcus has 331 attempts and Gabbert had 101.

Big Ben has 675 this year alone. That’s over 200 more dropbacks just this year. So of course the QB hits are going to appear to be “low” because we were such a run heavy team.

So we didn't attempt many passes, and didn't allow many hits. Sounds about right.

FWIW, Seattle had fewer pass attempts and far more QB hits allowed. No team with as few QB hits allowed as us were anywhere close to the number of sacks that we "allowed". Andrew luck was hit more times than our QBs, yet sacked 29 fewer times. How the hell do you explain that?

Exactly which QB looks good when getting continuous pressure up the middle of the line? Brady’s worst games are when a defense generates pressure through the middle. You can’t get every throw off in less than 1 second.

I’ve answered this question before from you but here we go again.

It’s because the pressure is coming from up the middle. That was the book on the Titans. Pressure up the middle and play contain with your edge rushers. Watch the games again. Blitzes up the middle and our paper soft interior o line. QB can’t leave the pocket because the edge rushers have the angle on him. So it’s get rid of it or get sacked.

We allowed so many sacks because pressure up the middle with edge rushers playing contain makes it very difficult to extend the play. When QB’s roll out of the pocket to the left or right it’s most of the time because the edge defender overpursed and it’s behind the QB. So all the QB hits turned into sacks because of this.

So, in summation, there really wasn’t anywhere for Marcus to go.

Does he hold onto the ball too long at times? Yes. Does he need to develop better pocket awareness? Yes. Does he need to be more consistent? Hell yes.

However that does not mean you get to try and say the O line wasn’t any part of the problem because it absolutely was.

A knock against him in college per scouts was that he did not have good pocket feel, he tried to bail too often, and took too many sacks. Did his line suck at Oregon as well? It is that just a fundamental weakness in his game which is being exploited in the NFL?

Sorry, but that sounds like an excuse. Teams contained Mariota in the pocket and bull rushed him up the middle because they know that he panics and won't get rid of the ball. Many of the sacks he took were after the 2.5 second mark, the league average for QBs to get rid of the ball. He absolutely cannot hold onto the ball or try to escape in those situations, yet he attempted to time after time.

Again, half of his sacks took place in 3 games, all of which involved us trailing the opponent and them blitzing Mariota at will. That's on the QB to get rid of the ball, not the OL to give him all day when defenses were bringing the house. And he was hit 0 times while attempting a pass. He constantly attempted to bail and gave up on plays, which is why he was sacked so many times.

You can't use that picture... the receivers were clearly all running the wrong routes. Mariota was looking where they were supposed to be and they were not there.
