He was never going to play. But it would’ve been a marketing disaster to say so from the start because the stadium would’ve been half full on national tv. Business decision to spin the possibility that Mariota would play. Once it was a “sellout” the story changed about “potential permanent damage” etc.

Amen. Dude wasnt great in his prime. His mentality would not sit well here . That ship has sailed.....no sunk.

 

Kaepernick lost his role in SF to Gabbert. Take it for what’s its worth, but the off field garbage with CK is well documented and discussed here on many occasions.

I like bridgewater but he would have cost a lot more than Gabbert. Since Mariota can’t play 16 games, that cost should be worth it, but coming into 18, I still thought it was possible for Mariota to play a full season and not need to rely on a backup. Especially for the biggest game of the season.

 

I dont think Teddy was ever an option here, he went to New York because they had no QB and he thought he would win the job. Then of course they trade up for Darnold and no FA QB survives that situation so they traded him.

 

Yea I remember having a possibility at starting and that also means starting money which is the wierd thing about all this backup QB talk. Most of the board wants and “knows” we need an upgrade but better not cost a lot. Unfortunately for a decent backup you can actually trust, it’s going to cost unless we get lucky on a dice roll draft pick.

 

It's a passing league... having a legit backup QB is a must.

We were... content?... rolling with Gabbert. Granted, aside from Bridgewater, I don't recall having many options. Bridgewater was who I wanted, anyway.
