Believe it or not the state standards dictate the type of film....I have the ability to choose but the films must be deemed to be important and significant.

Play some Charleston Heston back in his prime during the 50's and 60's, or maybe a Charlie Chaplin flick to show them what a silent film was.

Actually showed a Charlie Chaplin short when we did a silent film project a couple of weeks ago.

    Kane.

Honestly I feel it's overrated. Although I suppose I get the significance of it. I mean it's not a bad movie by any stretch. But best film of all-time? IDK about that.

My college film professor was obsessed with it though and spent like 2 weeks basically breaking down every single scene. I've wondered if that experience kinda soured me on me the film. Perhaps I need to give it another watch and see how I feel now.

I tend to agree with your assessment....it was ground breaking for camera work and such however.

Honestly, I loved it. First time I saw it was in a university film study course.

Also, the Mister Burns character in the Simpsons made a lot more sense after I saw it lol

the controversy too I think is significant. Hurst was arguably the most powerful person in America at that time and he tried to stop the film -- because it was ostensibly about him.
