Leighton Vander Esch - ILB

Watching his workouts Id say thats a OLB as apposed to ILB.

Reasons to say yes to this guy is 1.) he has the build to play OLB in the NFL, and B.) we have a need at ILB and OLB, so he could settle in wherever we needed him. Then in a year he could take on a starting spot if Rak isnt retained.

I generally would say pass on a guy like him at 25 with his limited experience, but we have no glaring issues that have to be filled in right now, we can afford to let this guy find his way at his own pace. OLB's are hard to get at this level, generally best to throw draft picks at the position than to try luring one in during free agency.

 

LVE is definitely #1 on my "DO NOT WANT" list. This guy cant take on a block or shift through trash well at all... essential for a LB in our defense. He looks good in the highlighters where he is kept clean and can run to the ball carrier... you'll rarely see a highlight where he stuffs the lead blocker and peels off on the ball carrier. He looks the part but plays soft! Similar to Zach Brown without the extreme speed.

Vonch Lombardi actually has a pretty good draft break down of him (Vonch's videos are great in general for draft prospects)

 

Ive been watching film on this kid. And like what i see.

Def some holes in his game but i think hed be worth a shot.

 

You watch Brett Coleman's scouting videos? I really enjoy his.

 

I keep watching video on him trying to make myself like him, because I know he's one of the more likely picks for us, but I just don't see it. To me he looks slow on the field. He's a drag down tackler instead of someone who hits guys with power. I much prefer Rashaan Evans over him if we go ILB. I may even prefer Malik Jefferson.

 

I may be able to stomach Malik in second. But, not first.

 

@The Hammer has assured us that we dont want Malik.
