I’ll give ya the headcase part...Terrible. That said, he rarely developed good QB’s. Look what he did with Goff and others.

His choice for offensive coordinator last season was horrendous. Sometimes he’s a little too loyal but was never afraid to make changes. Other than that, I think he’s a great coach.

That's why the Rams significantly improved after he left?

It's not crap. Nobody judges defenses by points because it doesn't take into account the factors I listed. Even the advanced stats say the Patriots D isn't very good.

Their defense got better this year but they also played a lot of bad offenses later in the season.

Did it look like we played a defense which was not very good last week? New England has played bend but don't break defense every since Belichick has been around, and it works. Every single year.

Atlanta had the top offense last year, and one of the worst scoring defenses. As did New Orleans. Those advanced statistics are absolutely ridiculous and meaningless.

Anyone getting any whispers of how any of the candidates have interviewed so far?

I personally think Vrabel is getting favorite status for him and JRob knowing each other and coming from the Pats organization. And while JRob may want someone who will instill that culture, etc., it's unclear if Vrabel could make that happen as a HC since he hasn't been coaching in the NFL very long and was a 1st year DC.

Personally, I think it'll come down to not only the candidate himself, but who he's playing to bring in as OC, DC, and ST and how they are gonna maximize the players...especially on offense.

It seems every defensive minded HC candidate is rumored to want to bring Defillipo with him. We've heard this with Wilks, Schwartz and possibly Vrabel. This is assuming Defillipo doesn't get the Cards HC job. Who is plan B or C or D? I feel like these pairings are more speculation than an actual thing althought the Wilks Defillipo thing Ive heard for other spots as well.

We know their are basically two top offensive guys...LaFleur and Defillipo...while I'd say Wilks is the best combo on the defensive side.

I think Defillipo and Wilks sound like what we are looking for in a leader, tough, detailed, and know how to maximize talent on their side of the ball. This combo sounds great. Wilks has more experience, but if we can get both, sounds like a promising start. Plus, if Defillipo can get Mariota to put up numbers like Wentz was on pace for, we'd all be really happy.

Potential problems are...who would be his DC? Would we stay in 3-4 or transition to a 4-3? Defillipo is an excellent coach, but Wentz's success wasn't based on Flip's playcalling as Pederson calls the plays.

LaFleur is an interesting guy and someone we might want to get in here on some level if Flip isn't our HC or OC. LaFleur has demonstrable success in both coaching rookie qb out of a similar spread system (RG3's rookie year) as well as helping a very good and established QB (Matt Ryan) crank things up and become the MVP. He was also the OC for the Rams and turned Goff around in a hurry.

If we want to give Mariota his best chance to be a super star and for us to be a top 5 offense, it appears we need one of these 2 guys on the staff if not HC.

Question is, who would LaFleur bring in as DC if he were hired as HC? It seems like there are more high quality DC candidates than top notch OC candidates.

It'll be interesting to see if Eagles lose, do we immediately put in a request to interview Defillipo or not? If Vikes lose, do we try and go after Pat Shurmer or is the Giants thing set in stone?

    Thoughts?

Vrabel, Wilks, and LeFleur. While either, or all of these three may very well end up being successful head coaches... their scarce longevity of coordinating experience scare me a bit. I do not think Jon Robinson will hire any of these names.

Possible names in which not too many are talking about, or even actually considering are David Shaw (my darkhorse), Chris Peterson, and Matt Campbell. Jumping from College to Pros... anyone know of some good examples? Jim Harbaugh and Pete Carroll are obvious. And bad ones/failures come to mind like Saban and Chip Kelly.

I like the idea of David Shaw, and of these three names listed above, he's the only one with NFL coaching experience. Don't be surprised if Shaw gets an interview!

Worth noting - In 2005, Shaw was the WR coach for the Ravens when Derrick Mason set a Ravens single season record 86 receptions and posted 1,073 yards (3rd highest Baltimore record).

Why do you keep talking about last year? Nobody is talking about last year. The Patriots defense this year hasn't been one of the best defenses in the league this year and I don't think you'll find anybody that watches football regularly that would think they are.
