He coached LB's for Fickell for one year and DL for Urban Meyer for the final two years before moving on to the NFL. When Urban Meyer took over he stated that he was not sold on some of the in house coaches and they would need to prove themselves in an interview and "sell" themselves to remain on staff. Where Fickell and Meyer seemed to hit it off immediately, Meyer and Vrabel did not seem to mesh well together. Meyer replaced Vrabel after two seasons with the great DL coach Larry Johnson who left Penn State when Bill O'Brian went to the Texans from PSU. I remember the comment that Meyer made about the coaching changes to his staff that off season..." There just seemed to be to much rah, rah going on and not enough coaching." I am sure Vrabel is a quality coach and person but if you have been replaced by Urban Meyer, I am not sure that you are ready to take on the responsibility of an entire NFL team and coaching staff. Vrabel may do just fine as the Titans HC, he is just not my number one choice at this time.

I tend to agree with everything you said there. I just dont see the appeal to a guy with so little experience.

He needs a couple more years as a coordinator before I have any interest.

Agree that his inexperience is a reason for concern. But the rah rah doesn’t bother me. A head coach needs to inspire and motivate players. He doesn’t have to be a great coach of technique. But he also needs a good sense of X’s and O’s...and to be detail oriented. If vrabel is not good at those things, all the rah rah in the world won’t help him

Leave the Xs and Os to your coordinators. Isn't that why most of you hate Mularkey, because he was too involved in the offense?

Just hire damn good coordinators, be a leader of men and a Team Manager. Head coaches shouldn't run personnel groups i.e. Whiz/McDaniels/Martz

Thought this thread was going to be about that time he busted his forehead open when he headbutted an Ohio St. player that had a helmet on....

The key is to get a well respected guy to be HC, one who preferably has enough experience to make QUALITY Coordinator hires and other staff. The young “flash” guys are OK but I DON’T want a HC running the offense. That’s what we just got away from. I’d rather have a well respected guy who is comfortable delegating AND holding his staff accountable. That was Mularkey’s biggest problem. He just couldn’t admit his system was archaic, ineffective and easy to defend. And he wouldn’t hold his staff accountable.

I’d rather have Schwartz who has been a HC before or maybe McDaniels if he’s “wised up” the value of team diplomacy provided they bring some kick A coordinator help.

Where would Vrabel pull coaches from? Guys just so damn young.

At least with Wilks he has 11 years in the NFL as a coach, which should mean more resources..

You really want to bring up age? McDaniels isn't old, McVay, Kyle Shanahan, Jake Pees, Matt Patricia, etc.
