Thus a BS subjective rule. How do you know when a slide starts? How do you know when a defender can pull up? What is the rate that the runner that slides head drops to within the range they may be hit in the head now?

Of all the head hits I've seen, this was a late slide on Flacco and a shoulder that hit him, not dirty and I don't think penalty worthy.

I understand how you feel. That doesn't matter in this instance though. The NFL rules do. According to the rules, there is no question the play was a penalty on Alonso. It cannot be argued that he hadn't started the slide. Call it late if you want. I get that. The rules still make that a very clear personal foul.

Now that I read the specifics to the rule, there's inconsistency in the rule book. While yes, the defense is supposed to pull up the moment the runner "starts" the slide, the ball isn't dead until the runner touches with anything other than hand/foot.

Rewatching the replay, yes Kiko hit him after that slide started (although he needs some work in that slide) he hit him very close to the same time the ball was dead.

That in mind, the difference between when the runner starts to slide and when they are down could be up to an entire yard which on this specific play, Flacco was down about 2 yards shy of the FD marker. That's a key detail in the ruling that can definitely effct a FD or not.

After watching even more, Flacco starts his slide at least 2 yards before he is actually down.

Kiko needs to be afforded the opportunity to stop even a sliding player from picking up the first.

    Complete BS rule.

Isn't the down marked where the slide started, not where it ends?

By the way I read the rule (the post just before the video) it says the the ball is marked as soon as the runner is "down". That is anything outside of feet or hands touching the ground. A slide "starts" before that point.
