Some of the posts on whatever sight this guy was posting to were pretty strange. The part that caught my attention was the list of equipment needed for time traveling.

Considering how serious some people took this I was trying to find other stories of people that blew themselves up or something weird trying to duplicate it.

Back when I used to read various conspiracy theories, I ran across him along with quite a few other pictures that appears to show someone in the past with a modern invention on them.

Neat stuff but it got boring. If someone is coming from the future, I'd hope they would be offer something to our current population. If not, they are just assholes.

This guy did actually say WW3 would take the world population down to around 500 million (hear that @GoT ) and the US would have about 50 million of them BUT unless it happened in a different timeline than our own (as per him, not me) he was wrong. I know big surprise.

Seems about as accurate as that Nostradamus guy who people believe in way more than they should.

It really wasn't... Constant contradictions and nothing compelling about his story. The late 90s wasn't some different world. The internet was much the same as it is now.

I don't think he was taken seriously. More like he was an infamous troll at the time. People were interested in how far he took his trolling. It's the internet where anything can go "viral".

The internet was vastly different compared to today. After the whirlwind of it all people realized it was BS. The boards he posted on had skeptics and believers.

Viral wasn't even marketing internet lingo back then. Not much from that time period has remained in knowledge quite like that story. Heck they even made an anime about it.

People "fell" for trolling and viral stuff more in the earlier days of the internet.

People weren't really more gullible then... just weren't sure what to think of all that info at the time.
