I wonder if that's ultimately how they view Byard's fit on the defense. He showed some impressive range on the tape I saw of his game against the champs.

Byard unfortunately didn't show it last year and they refused to say he would be a true FS this year already.

He was a rookie.... even optimistic scouts seem to indicate that Hooker will struggle mightily in his first year as a pro.

Hooker is raw no doubt. Byard isn't trash but the ability to cover ground is not equal. Byard as the coverage SS is a great spot for him.

Here he is catching Kenyan Drake from behind, who runs a 4.45 in the 40. He's more athletic than you give him credit for.

What? You've completely convinced me that you are CypriensUncle. Byard was applauded for his coverage skills and was known as the best ball-hawking FS in the nation nobody ever heard of. You think he got 20 INTs playing run defense?

Nobody is saying Cyprien isn't gonna be an asset to the run game, the run game wasn't a problem for our defense at all. What we are all saying CypriensUncle, is that his positives in the run game won't outweigh his negatives in pass coverages. Nobody is asking him to man up on a slot or outside WR, but as Ensco has pointed out a number of times, Cyprien is bad at zone coverage as well and is a strictly forward moving player.

Big deal if he can rush the passer, HE's A SAFETY!! If we're rushing him enough to make that his calling card we have much much bigger problems!

There's very few FS (regardless of speed) that can cover the field (and scare QBs) from Center field. Byard didn't show that ability. Hooker has. At least in college. Some of that is reading and diagnosing a play quick enough to get a jump on the ball as well.

There's no denying that in all likelihood, Hooker is better. There's a reason he's a potential top 10 pick. But he can't be in two places at once; the CB play has to improve significantly for him to be his most effective, and I think 5 is far too rich for a centerfielder until that happens.

STRONG Safety not a FREE Safety. So you're telling me we got the #1 run stopping SS in the league and people are complaining??? Clearly the team is focused on stopping the run first and got THE BEST player that fits that model. I know it’s the off-season and there isn’t much else going on, but let’s all please have a little faith and optimism.

    1. Welcome to 2017 not 1997
    2. Our Run defense last year was ranked 2nd in yards allowed.
    3. Our pass defense was ranked 30th in yards allowed.

Another player that fits the 30th best pass defense model though!!!
