    Great topic

My son is 8 and is starting to ask if he can play organized football. Him and his buddies play during recess every day at school and hes actually pretty good. He also knows a lot about the game due to me watching a ton of it at home, so the itch is there to play.

But Im not letting him play just yet because of the recent information on head trauma. I escaped the game concussion free, so Im not at all against him playing later down the road, but not at his age. 8 year olds dont have the bodies to play football, he'll have to wait til 11 or 12 so he stands half a chance like I did and not get his head knocked off.

YES! And thats why I have my son doing martial arts.

Its fun for him, keeps him active, builds great character, and gets him all kinds of friends just like playing football would. And almost zero chance of a head injury.

In football its not a matter of if you get hurt, but when...

Dont toss the helmets, the helmets make the sport spectacular. Just educate players on the topic and let them and their parents decide if its worth the risks.

As you know, there is a ticking clock on playing football, the best of the best get til their 30's and then its gone. I think if people were smart about it like Patrick Willis and Calvin Johnson and quit while they're ahead the game can continue as it is.

Almost every sized guy can play the game. But you do need to be at least 5'7" 170lbs to even dream about going pro

Teach your kid to throw/kick and pump him full of milk.

Don't know how far this stretches across the nation, but in Hampton Roads, VA, youth football is only flag football until Middle School (about 12 years old)

He does like soccer so maybe a K or P could be in his future. He'll probably top 5' 7" but less than 6' and with how tiny he is now that 170 may not happen until his late teens unless he packs on some mass. Truly don't think he has the interest though.

thats all it really needs to be before middle school,

like I said above, kids under 11 or 12 dont have the bodies to play contact football, they dont stand a chance in the event of a blindside hit to the head, not enough mass to cushion the impact...

On top of that, at least locally here, the Middle School levels have very very rare "big" hits. The long term damage that could happen at that age is likely not head related.

Thx for the input. Yeah, I escaped with 1 possible concussion and a very bad separated shoulder that still sticks out, 14 years later. Outside of the social contacts made through the sport, I really don't look back that fondly on it.

My son seeing RB's on TV and in Madden and he thinks he wants that to be his position when he finally plays, but Im telling him anything but RB due to the amount of contact they see.

Hes got great hands so Im pushing towards WR. Our family the men range from 5'8" - 6'2" so he'll absolutely be able to play WR at higher levels if thats something he aspires to do...
