The syndesmosis is not a tendon. It's group of ligaments that hold the tibia and fibula together. I think Dr Robert Klapper talks about it on his podcast (it was posted on ESPN).

You can break your ankle without tearing your syndesmosis, which is what probably happened to Carr.

Dr. Klapper is probably right on the syndesmosis even if the team isn't discussing it (and these doctors at this level of their craft know each other and sometimes discuss war stories, so to speak). You can contrast what happened with Derek Carr whom his family spoke about having no ligament damage and his recovery will be 6-8 weeks. Bones heal faster than tendons, which often take up to 6 months to heal. I've gone through three different achilles tendon rupture surgeries (a second surgery on the left leg after I slipped and put weight on the leg at 6 weeks post surgery...that really sucked).

I haven't listened to the podcast but I'm guessing he won't be allowed to put weight on the leg for 8-10 weeks. After that it's getting back into football shape which is difficult since it's amazing how much lower leg muscle quickly atrophy when they aren't used. Rehab after surgery for me was 3-4 months (except for my second left leg surgery where rehab lasted a conservative 6 months).

How he is after surgery and rehab is an open guess but I'm sure that there is lots of existing medical literature on the subject. He's lucky he's a 23 year old pro athlete in top physical form, which helps. I was a 35 year old weekend warrior who used to play Div 1 college basketball.

What a contraption. Elevated skate board. Surprised they lit him risk using that so soon. Must be Charlotte airport. No one is even looking.

That's pretty much the same "elevated skate board" I used for my post-achilles surgery in 2009. It's a lot easier getting around on that thing than crutches (although doing the crutches after my first achilles surgery in 2001 got me great upper body strength). It'll take him a few days to get used to it and then he'll be zipping around like...well, a kid on a skateboard.
