I don't have a problem with Mariani, but he offers nothing special. Once again, he doesn't flip field position (http://www.nfl.com/stats/categoryst...egory=KICK_RETURNS&season=2016&seasonType=REG). This is important in the NFL.

Since your focus is on fumbling:
Per NFL, Devin Hester (http://www.nfl.com/player/devinhester/2506897/profile) 5 fumbles - 1 fumble lost.

Do you think Tyreek Hill (http://www.nfl.com/player/tyreekhill/2556214/profile) is a good returner (I already know the answer)? Take a guess how many fumbles he has had this year (and lost)? I will do the work for you 3 fumbles and 1 fumble lost.

They are returners, it happens. Whenever we get our new exciting returner in the future he will make some mistakes (fumbles) also. Great returners take chances, this is what made Hester great and what makes Hill great at the moment. You can't always play it safe.

THE THREAT they possesses puts your Special Team on notice (fear). One mistake and he is "to the house."

At 34 years of age, the only "house" Hester has been going to is his own, post-game.

Now I miss the BS button.

I notice you didn't put up Mariani's fumble numbers in this long unnecessary reply. That'd be 2 with zero lost.

How about looking up the ST penalty stats against the Titans? Would the returner really even matter between TD's called back and fumbles?

Tyreek Hill always seems to pop up in these conversations. #1 PR, #2 KR (if he had more returns to qualify)

Being a great returner doesn't mean more fumbles because of the "chances they take" either. For example, Hester in 2007, seven(7) PR/KR TD with ZERO fumbles. 3 more in 2010 with ZERO fumbles. 3 more in 2011 with 1 fumble, not lost. So the fact that he has 5 fumbles this year tells me he is FAR from what he used to be.

I agree. The Pats special teams is awful. He's clearly passed his prime but the Patriots are just looking for someone just to catch the ball. Wouldn't be surprised if he was on their roster by the end of the week.

Teams in the playoff hunt don't waive guys that are important as you say to field position and "THREATS"...Hester is on the down side of his career.

Given our clock-eating, grind it out style of offense and much less than dominant defense, we simply cannot overcome turnovers. High-scoring juggernaut like the Patriots OTOH, can often make up for them. Mariani fits our style better. Hester at this stage is more likely to fumble than break off a return...
