Make the players hold the advertisements. They have no problems holding pictures to relay plays to the field.

Ad prices are determined by the amount of viewers watching a particular show. Matters not if it is the NFL, or a soap opera. The only influence is the demographics of how many and what age are watching. So let's say a football game costs $200,000 per spot and they reach 3 million viewers. They do the math and come up with a cost per thousand, which is how much money did it take to reach viewers in our age demographic for that particular show. If they can do the same thing as a Nascar race or cheaper, they might go that way. So you are not going to convince them that charging more for less commercials is going to help them in any way. May be true, but not the way it works.

The first year the Preds played here, there was a huge problem because the periods (no pun intended) were shorter which gave less time for the women to go potty. You can tell the building was designed by some guy that gave no thought to how much longer it took women to go than men. So eventually the women would barge into the men's room and take the stalls while the men had the urinals. Well this little protest didn't last long in the Bible belt, so pretty soon there were many more women's restrooms than mens.

It's pretty simple... change the rules so that teams use the run game more.

I have no problems with 3.5 hours but I don't like the allotted time given to commercials. I'd be ok with extended half time by about 10 minutes if it eliminated about 10 minutes of commercials throughout the game.
At halftime, for TV viewers, we'd be able to see more highlights than just 1 per game or less (provided they don't ESPN it up and bring in "in depth analysis BS)
Halftime at the stadiums should have some sort of live entertainment. I wasn't around for the old Baltimore Colts band, but why not have a halftime band for every team, play 2 songs or so.

Ref reviews can really get into it's own threads and I'm sure it has. Im so sick of refs being too scared to just make the damn calls. I blame replay for a lot of the inconsistencies of the refs (I do think full time refs is very reasonable request). I think they just kind of half ass watch plays knowing that replay will bail them out. I guess to a certain degree, I'm a (literally can't think of the word, but baseball fans that don't want instant replay). I'm ok with a couple challenges here and there, but the auto replay is too much.

We could eliminate the forward pass and keep the clock running. Oh wait, we did that back in the 1800's and it was called Rugby. They have 40 minute halves and their games are over in an hour and a half mostly, some run a bit longer due to injury time outs. Clock never stops except for that.

Not where I was going with that but I love sarcasm. The question was how to shorten the games... right now the rules encourage a 30-40 pass attempt a game mentality. All I'm saying is let the db's play instead of tossing the freaking flag for hand checking. Simplify the rules to encourage more rushing. They could also run the clock as soon as the ball is set after an incomplete pass instead of running it at the snap.

The game LENGTH is not the issue. The standing around and other lack of things going on during the 3.5 hours is the issue.

It's a slow paced game. Everybody now knows that there's about 11 minutes of action in a 3 hour game. Shorten play clocks or something, to increase the amount of action per hour.
Not much will change until the fans start really checking out, which may be in the next decade.

Not having the refs huddle for 6 mins after eat penalty (or in some cases, non penalty) would help. I just hate when they talk it out forever and then the ref mumbles out the announcement that there is in fact no penalty.

I don't remember which game it was but the refs talked over a kick going out of bounds for a good 3 mins in a recent Titans game. Wtf is there to talk about? The ball went out of bounds!

I'm fine with the length of the game, but the PACE is a problem.
