As much as I dig a lot of their tunes (wish you were here, time, shine on, comfortably numb, etc) I find them to be pretty depressing. And I like music that's an escape from dull and depressing life, and that's not Floyd to me.

Yep. I f'ing hate blues. If blues guitar solos are so great, how come so many 15 year olds can play them? Having to play with blues guitarists is maddening because they have no idea what a verse, chorus and bridge is; all they know is three lines/solo/three lines/solo. And if you're gonna rep music which is THAT old, why not Glenn Miller?...Cole Porter?...Scott Joplin?...
Yeah. Screw blues and the horse it road in on. Great for the left side of the Bell Curve but not for me...

Personally, I simply don't equate playing difficulty as a yardstick for how good music is. Sure, difficulty can impress and be an aspect of a good performance but it's not the end-all and has even less bearing on what makes a song good.
Ramones = great / Dream Theater = suck, IMO.

You either know that stuff (song parts) or you don't. Being a blues anchored player has no effect on knowing song parts. I'd say freeform jazz guys would be less inclined to pay attention to song parts than blues players. So I don't know what you're on about there.

Just like any new music outfits that were or weren't added, any of those ancient guys (Glenn Miller etc) could have been added to the voting list too.
There was more than ample opportunity.
Given that, what exactly is the problem - or should the contestants simply all have been Avvie-approved prior to making the list?

It's a red letter day for rock's domination over false rock.

Yeah. Whatever is meant by "not knowing verse from chorus" is probably more likely a problem that the guitar player just sucks or didnt take the time to get acquainted with the music. that happens with all styles of amateurish guitarists. The only local guitarist I've seen who was shockingly obnoxious was a guy whose bands played the standards, and the guy felt the need to precisely place odd Jazz solos into the songs. Literally thought he just played wrong notes.... Later on, found out he meticulously plans out every note.. But it sounds like garbage.

Give me a 4 note playing Blues lead guitarist over that crap any day!!!

I miss the magic of music from when I was a kid. Now, it's been replaced with analyzing each part until it sucks a lot of the fun out of listening and watching. And I know I'm not alone in that.

It would be a thrill to see music through fresh eyes again, instead of worrying about the petty crap.

    Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Damn you closed down the voting quick!

I really like both bands but Floyd would have gotten my vote. Close though.

It has nothing to do with complexity; it has everything to do with being very narrowly focused and then calling yourself "professional". It has been my experience- REPEATEDLY- that blues guitarists either can't do anything else or they do it poorly and try to force blues solos into it. Guitar is not about soloing...even Eddie Van Halen knew that. And yes, Ramones are great...if any blues gutarist I've ever met could play a Ramones tune like a Ramones tune I'd eat my hat.
