I still don't understand how a motor small enough to fit in a bike frame, run on what has to be a small reserve of battery has enough power to power a bike with a grown man on it.

That's a tiny motor with a lot of power. Where do you get such a thing? Every motor I've ever seen that size doesn't have that kind of torque.

You get used to it. Of course you have to wear the proper clothing.

Ok, get ready for some human science. Even at pro elite levels the human body can only produces about 400-450 watts for a 5 minute effort. That is less than 1 horse power....(1 hp is about 750 watts). Lance, in all his EPO glory was putting out about 6.9 watts per kilogram of weight...or about 475 watts for a five minute all out effort. So, if one had a small, lightweight electric motor fitted that could produce say 50 watts, less than the power to light a typical household lightbulb, then suddenly that person would have a huge advantage if used at the right time, ie, the last few minutes or a particularly hard part of the course or race. I myself can put out about 290 watts for 5 minutes....not bad for a masters level amateur
(I am a multiple time medalists for the open State Time Trial championship), But, if I were to use this example of a tiny motor then suddenly I would be competing at an entry level pro power output. It would be a huge increase in power.

I understand the advantage of having the motor. My question is where the hell do you get a electric motor small enough to fit in a bicycle frame with enough power to propel a full grown man.

I read the story of the guy getting busted and did some research yesterday. There was another guy who was suspected but they never had the evidence to do anything about it. In the videos, you clearly see him reach for the hidden button and then suddenly he zooms away from the pack like he was on a street bike versus their bicycle.

Small motor, mounted inside the seat tube....again...the motor wouldn't "propel" the person...just give a assist in power. And, as I said in the other post, even a small assist would be a huge gain in power..compared to the riders not having it.

no reason the thing could not store waste energy, otherwise known as heat, and be used multiple times I would suspect plenty of places to grab heat inside a bike frame.

FWIW the chick claims it was a friends identical bike that was set up for the race accidentally.

My opinion is nobody will much care how it happened at all

I'm trying to picture how it's assisting. The set up in the video I watched was a motor with a gear, connected to a gear that drove the sprocket. Take your feet off the pedals with the motor on, the motor is still driving the sprocket and propelling the bike. (If there's enough power)

I guess what you're saying is that you create the momentum and then the motor takes over and you're no longer exerting the energy.

Say you are pedaling along with the motor driving the pedals. You're not exerting the energy as long as you stay under the force of the motor....go over the motor force and you exert energy and the motor is pointless. All the while you still have to pedal to keep up with the motor. In the long run I think what you're gaining is stamina more than power.

Btw, I'm not arguing that you're wrong. I'm just having a discussion. Lol

That's getting really complicated for the insides of bike frame. Lol. As I said in my last post, I think the major advantage is gaining a bit of stamina. The motor is used in short bursts when needed so the rider saves energy to use later. Not sure what kind of battery set up they had on the one I saw they didn't go in to detail on it. But I'd assume anything they can fit in a bike frame can't be very high capacity.

The motor doesn't take over...it is just a power assist. I watched the video also, I have my doubts that this was what was actually used...I suspect the details about the original post will come out soon.

I'm interested to know how it works. I don't care about cycling, but I never would have believed people would try to hide electric motors in the frame to gain an advantage so I'm intrigued.
I really see no other way it could have been done.

Also, I don't see how the power of the motor and the power from pedaling would somehow be combined to assist each other.

It would be like going down a big hill... You can pedal but if you don't catch up to the momentum you're just spinning and not gaining speed. Once you reach the bottom, you catch up and you have to exert force against the pedals to keep the momentum.

Maybe I'm thinking way too much in to this. Lol
