Anyone else watch "Making a Murderer?"

    Brendan's story is a a tragedy.
    Another Jesse Misskelly.
    Even 'his' lawyers that didn't attempt to entrap him were just plain awful. The defense is spelled out in the WM3 trial. You have to hire coercion experts to spell out how law enforcement works their magic against witless rubes like this kid.
    I would put several of his defense lawyers in jail.
    The first one was straight up the William H Macy character from Fargo.

    Steve got royally screwed the first time around for 18 years on a crime he didn't commit, but the victim herself said she was sure it was him......that was what did him in the first time and the police aided the way as well.

    The Halbach murder is hard to get Steve out of because he saw her that day and Brendan's nit wit confessions of back and forth didn't help either. Brendan's sister didn't help him out either when she first submitted her statement.

    A lot of stuff has been coming up lately that were excluded from the Neflix episodes that pushes toward Steve being guilty. Even his ex-GF said she believes he did it and he use to beat her as well.

    Not sure why Halbach's boyfriend was not a suspect at any time....all of a sudden there were deleted messages off her phone?

    Girlfriend comments, guilt or innocence, Avery's conviction is based off of 'evidence' that doesn't add up. When jurors come out of a conviction and verbally state 'they simply wanted to get out of there' being the only reason they wouldn't stand up to a minority block of jurors maintaining guilt - should be enough for a retrial.
    But these courts cost the state money and most DA's and judges have continuing political aspirations, making retrials very much a thing none of them ever want.
    So yeah, you get imprisoned, you're boned.

    Based on everything I've read since watching the show, I tend to think it's at least likely Avery murdered her. But the whole Dassey side of things was a complete miscarriage of justice no matter how you look at it. They probably both deserve new trials tbh. The one thing I had a hard time getting past was the DNA kit with the seal broken and the needle puncture. I mean even with all the other evidence pointing to Avery, howTF do you even begin to explain that?

    I just finished this tonight. It was an interesting series which, no doubt, left a few things untold which probably would have made it easier to understand Avery's conviction.

    What I couldn't get past was that her bones were found in more than his backyard pit. Why move some remains to or from the pit?

    Also, if you're going to go to the trouble of breaking into evidence to steal blood, why not take the entire vial? Or the box itself?

    Hide her car on the property when friggin' Lake Superior is close? How about using the car crusher?

    I know we're not talking about Mensa minds here but it was like watching Fargo in real life.

    I originally felt the same way but it's now come out that an authorized nurse pierced the vial which is why the defense team didn't bring it up in trial.

    Okay. They acted like it was the "smoking gun" and like there was no reason for the hole to be there. Just goes to show how biased this thing really was.

    I typically expect the filmmakers to come down on one side of the issue or the other. But it really pisses me off when I watch something I really enjoyed and then find out they blatantly disregarded MAJOR evidence that runs contrary to their position. Particularly on a subject like this where murder was involved. This series has (at least) tens of thousands of people screaming "Avery is innocent" when he very will may have, and probably did, kill her.

    I think the doc shows the the evolution and devaluation of the vial pretty clearly.
    At first they are jazzed to discover what they think may be the smoking gun - then Strang acknowledges that it has become less significant as trial approaches.
    Even with knowledge that a woman may have punctured the vial, it can't be precluded as planting evidence until they have a bonafide testing method for the preservative chemical. Nothing they showed in the doc or subsequent concretely rules out this vial as a source of potential planting.

    Put aside for a moment that Avery may have actually killed the girl. The state still never shows viable evidence to prove it. Every inch of the material revealed either screams plant, or cannot be ruled out as plant. This is very unique in and of itself.

    It would be a shame if a murderer could not be brought to justice via legitimate evidence - but it is far worse when the state can manufacture the materials they need to put whoever they deem needs to be punished.

    I just remember them acting like they hit the jackpot and then crickets. But I'm not saying you're lying, I probably just missed it. Either way in a 10hr doc series I believe they couldn't spent an extra 20 seconds explaining the nurse story and that it IS very normal for the vials to have puncture marks. By not offering up that little tidbit they get to sway viewers even more, despite saying "it has become less significant" or whatever.

    I can agree with that.

    Oh absolutely. I've said from day one some shady s*** was going on with that Sheriff's department in particular. I have very little doubt that the key and shell casing were planted.

    I've always agreed with this sentiment 100%. They both deserve new trials no doubt.
