That is simply not the professional way to handle it. They are not trying to punish Mulatkey, he stepped in in tough circumstances and helped the team out. You want to make a good impression on potential candidates and you don't do that by treating people with so little respect. They may very well have decided by his 3rd game he wasn't coming back, but they are going by the book on this one.

To be fair, he inherited a less than ideal situation and without being able to change the scheme and the poorly built OL, he was able to improve some areas and keep the players from quitting in a losing situation. For that work, as well as his previous success as oc in Atlanta with s young Matt Ryan and his good job as our TE coach, you give him the interview to see what he WOULD do with this team. Scheme, personnel, coaching staff changes. If nothing else, it should give Underwood and Amy a clue as to what needs to be done. If they had a list of over 150 candidates, even eliminating people who don't want to leave their current jobs and don't want to come here, it seems nearly impossible that Mularkey could be the best HC they could get.

For that reason and to show the fans and community they ARE committed to building a championship franchise, they need to not worry about wasting money and go get the best gm and hc! This IS a prime coaching opportunity but one thing remains...a great gm/personnel guy. Coaches like McDaniels or Sean Payton won't come if they don't think the GM is good.

I don't think it's very respectful to drag matters out when they've had several weeks to formulate an informed opinion of him as a candidate. Let's keep things in perspective. No one owes Mularkey anything. He was hired here as a position coach, not on a trial HC'ing basis. He was fortunate enough that he got another opportunity to effectively audition for the vacant HC position, but beyond that, there is no reason to feel compelled to "give him a fair shot" simply because that opportunity wasn't under ideal circumstances.

If we suddenly started winning a bunch of games after he became the Interim HC, then he could say "I made a good case for myself." That didn't happen and a case was subsequently not made. The only thing made are excuses. It's not personal or anything. It is what it is. You win, you impress. You don't, you don't.

I'm not big on keeping Mularkey... but I can live with it knowing Webster is gone.

Could be worse... could've retained both.

Dolphins also said they were considering their interim HC for the permanent position ... but we all know it's not serious.

Both he and Mularkey will get a interview out of respect, plus there's that saying about not burning bridges. Never know what may happen down the road

Well according to the press conference, they did tell him he would get consideration at the end of the season and he was at that point hired as HC not as position coach. I think Underwood made a good point about Jeff Fisher winning only 1 game as an interim. Now Jeff's long term success is well documented and not north adding to today. It is just being thourough to let him interview and express what he would do if given the chance from top to bottom. At the worse case, you get good information you may use with other candidates. It just isn't troubling to me as you said it was for you. Having run a very successful firm for years, it is what I would do too.

Well, regarding Jeff Fisher's record as an interim, different set of circumstances for a different day/time. First of all, anytime you hire an assistant coach into the role of the HC, it literally is a roll of the dice. Nothing more and nothing less. There is no record as a HC to go on. With Mularky, as with Whisenhunt, there is a record as HC to examine.

One could always claim this wasn't fair or that wasn't fair, but the bottom line is your record. It's why I much prefer Kelly over everyone else. He has a solid record as a HC both in College and in the NFL. He even fits the criteria of being able to get the most out of the QB's he has. You can see statistical evidence of that with Foles, Sanchez and Bradford. That's not even mentioning his history with MM8, nor the fact that Marcus would not have to be burdened further learning a new system. He ran Kelly's to perfection in Oregon, and I'm sure it's been tweaked to adapt to NFL defenses.

So, I cringe everytime I hear someone compare a coach who didn't measure up during his limited audition, to other assistants or interim coaches in a similar circumstance. They should all be measured on the basis of their own individual merit, rather than those of others.
