    YEP!

Do you hate the Tampa Bay Lightning? Dallas Stars? Preds do ok financially, as well.

Arizona was a bad move, though.

I, for one, am very glad for the southward expansion... or else I wouldn't be a hockey fan right now.
They should pull the plug on the teams that truly aren't working, but he's trodding over the same old ground, not expanding south. Canada is as saturated with hockey as the USA is with the NFL, there's no room for growth.
I'm sure the new Nordiques will sell out every game, but bringing them back, along with the Jets, won't really do much for the NHL.

They don't count fans, they just count attendance. I go several times a year and I'm not a fan. There always seems to be a crap ton of work groups and stuff like that.

I guess my thing is that I can't really identify with hockey.

Everyone has played basketball. Everyone has played some kind of football and some baseball inspired game. I was an adult before I met someone that had played hockey.

I went to school in a really poor area. I remember some Canadian dude came to our school and told us all about hockey. It sounded cool. Yeah, sign me up. ...but with the travel, ice time, equipment, etc, it was like $8k. A lot of the kids in my class were in households that didn't even bring in $8k a year. A lot of the kids in my class were in houses that might not have even been worth $8k. I'm pretty sure my dad almost beat me when I asked to play.

    you know that is OK

there are 41+ dates to fill. If it takes corporate smoozing to fill it up then that is acceptable.

A certain level of that goes on in the NFL. I would think most of those boxes are corporate owned. Guessing of course.

That sort of thing is a baseball thing as well. I would guess NBA as well

    Who does count "fans?"
People are in the seats, cheering, buying food and beer, merchandise.. Not too relevant how they are labeled. Unless half the crowd is there with free tickets, butts in the seats are butts in the seats. Most people are there are wearing the team colors. At a game, people wearing team colors... I'd consider that a fan, whether they're part of a work group or whatever.

NFL and tons of other sports have tons of corporate sponsors/businesses who buy tickets by the tens, if not hundreds. NFL only has 8 home games per season. It would be interesting to see the Titans with only single seat STH, and no group ticket holders.

In any sense of the word, attendance of people wearing non opposing team colors=fans.

They still have better attendance than some very established NHL franchises. And that is what matters to the everyone that matters (owners, NHL)

We do baseball, too. A day game at the Braves seems like it might be 50% corporate outings.

Anyway, we get this as a reward, so it would be pretty rude to not go, but a lot of people hate going to the hockey games. Only a handful of people actually watch, then you get home at like 3 AM and are expected to be sharp at work a few hours later.

We take a tour bus and a ticket gets put in our hand like 5 feet in front of the gate, so not much chance for that kind of stuff.
