Apologies if there's another thread about this. I haven't been on the forum much this summer.

Have we discussed how awful Bernard Pollard is at making tackles in the open field? Both long Falcons TDs were the result of him looking like a blind person trying to wrap guys up.

Look at how bad he is in these 2 videos:

I don't care if Pollard talks big and is a leader in the locker room. He's not good enough to be on the field. It isn't a mistake that he was cut by team after team before he signed with the Titans. He sucks. It's a position that should have been upgraded in the offseason.

I try to not over-react when it comes to vet play during the preseason.

The problem is, the have a good amount of holes to fill. Pick your poison ya know? I really hope that pass coverage and pass rushing improves, because it looks really bad right now.

The offensive line is looking crappy again also....it's preseason though, so I'm trying to stay cool and judge a bit later.

I can also show you a play where he made a great open field tackle on Roddy White. Bernard Pollard is least of our concerns.

Look we all know Pollard has lost a couple steps, I'm not sure he can even run sub 4.8 anymore. So making tackles in the open field is always gonna be a crap shoot with him. He's starting because he is never out of position, he's smart, a leader and a damn good football player, albeit slow. On both of those plays JMac and Sensabaugh didn't exactly help matters, I mean JMac got abused by a very poor WR in Hester.

The "Pollard" type of player is going to be a dinosaur in the very, very near future. With WR's basically getting free releases and since a defender can no longer bump them to impede them in any way, slow safeties are going to get more and more exposed. We are going to see big corners that can run make the transition to safety more and more. Natural safeties that can run are going to be highly prized in the draft; we've seen that over the last 4 or 5 drafts.

lol. He's only 29 years old. He's not that old. He serves his purpose. He plays well in run support.

He's looked awful for much of his regular season career, too. Few guys have made more money off a few flukey plays (injuries Brady and others) than him. He has a reputation as an enforcer when all he is is yet another guy who goes for the big hit every time and whiffs as much as makes a play.

I see him as a real weak spot. I see you guys don't necessarily agree. I guess we'll see. I doubt he's starting by the end of the season. If he is, it will only be because the team lacks any real depth behind him.

Yeah, Pollard is pretty far down on the list of things that worry me about this team.

And unlike OP, I do care how much of a leader he is. I absolutely care. Do we not remember just how lost and directionless this defense was before he came in? It was some of the most pathetic defense I'd seen in my entire life. Not saying Pollard worked any miracles but still it's nice to at least have a leader on that side of the ball now.

There are no doubt going to be bumps in the road during this transition. And Pollard will probably never be a great open-field tackler. But he brings plenty of other quality attributes.
