I am actually not surprised by the suicide of Robin Williams. It definitely makes me very sad - but his personality was associated with the highest of highs and typically those people experience frequent periods of rock bottom depression as well.

Friends note that when in a one-on-one scenario that Robin Williams simply "disappeared from the room". he just wasn't there - couldn't look you in the eye. Add one more person and he became that classic Robin Williams comedy lunatic.

I first saw "Mork" like everyone else my age, when he appeared on Happy Days, then later on his own show. It was a HUGE thing at the time and everybody loved him. Not long after he would star in The World According to Garp. I never read that book and didn't know what to expect but when the film came out it was kinda advertised as more of that crazy RW lunacy - but it was pretty much anything but that. It was a tragic film and I caught a whiff of tragedy about Robin Williams that eerily would continue to re-surface time and again in films like One Hour Photo, Insomnia etc.

There's a lot of talk of suicide being a selfish way out and in 95% of instances I believe that's true. The kids killing themselves over Facebook bullies etc. are tragic and totally avoidable if recognized early enough. But true depression is a tough one. The mind of that person can be utterly convinced that by offing themselves they are doing their loved ones a favor - saving them the same fate by association. Reprieve from a long road of grief. It's hard to fault a person outright if that sickness is in their mind.

We do not know if Robin Williams didn't have the beginnings of some horrible disease that would have consumed his family for the next decade, ultimately still resolving with his death. I don't fault Tony Scott for taking his own life when he did.

Calling suicide 'selfish' just masks a real problem and subliminally encourages depression. No doubt it is a selfish act, but when you are on the verge of suicide, the last thing that needs to be going through your mind is that you are being selfish. Its painfully obvious who does not relate to the problem based on some comments.

No 'sane' or 'normal' person is going to take their own life, and saying that is 'excusable' for someone in physical pain to commit suicide but not for mental pain is a laughably stupid thing to say. I cannot say I am surprised by the person not being able to look at another persons situation with any sort of understanding though.

I've said plenty of times that mental health is an issue that we as americans are ignoring, we seem to still have a ways to go. I hope that in some way this opens up that topic again.

I dealt with someone who suffered from severe depression.

Ruined a relationship. I was not equipped to deal with it.

You obviously have some beef with me but this post is dumb as **** as you are about this situation. Again, I have had a family member kill herself.

As you said agreeing with me, suicide is a selfish act. Period, point blank.

Now it is totally different when it is "assisted suicide" or "early termination" or even if the own person is able to off him/herself if they are dying of a horrible disease. Late stage cancer, etc. Also if someone is rapidly developing dementia to where they would have no quality of life, that is different too. I would not consider any of that selfish.

And I also understand that people can do something rash in a dark moment that they otherwise never would have done. It is still in that case a selfish act. One is doing something only for himself, whether it is with or without consideration for loved ones, the bottom line is you are devastating lives when you take your own; unless literally not one single person cares about you.

It's sad that this happened. It's ridiculous that some of you need to give him a total pass on HIS ACTIONS because you liked him in movies. Or if you are somehow deluded enough to justify suicide being okay but he was depressed and therefore we can't criticize what he did. His daughter, sons, ex-wife all have to live with this the rest of their lives. Unless something different comes out, it was selfish.

I get it that people feel sad when some actor/athlete/entertainer whatever dies from any means. But when people go over-the-top about someone they only knew on the tv, it is ridiculous imo. But I think society in general way overvalues entertainers vs say elite businessmen that have created jobs/products/etc that have changed or improved many lives and society.

What's even more ridiculous is that you feel so compelled to pass judgment on a dead man.

We agree on this at least. The people on the streets being interviewed for the nightly news who can't even put together a coherent sentence because they're so "devastated" are ridiculous (and in many cases just attention whores IMO). But on the flip side there's nothing wrong with saying "I was a fan and this is sad" and taking a minute to discuss all the great entertainment that person brought you over the years.
