First-year Titans offensive coordinator Jason Michael says fourth-year quarterback Jake Locker should be ready for big things this season.

Michael told the team’s website that Locker, who missed nine games last season and is recovering from foot surgery, is showing exactly the kind of dedication that a team expects from its franchise quarterback.

“From day one, he’s worked his butt off from rehabilitation of his foot to jumping in the playbook, to how he’s gone about his preparation on the field,” Michael said. “It’s been a frustrating go at times with his foot, but he’s never shown it. He’s a poised man. I’m excited about working with him. He does some good things that we’ve already seen.”

The Titans didn’t pick up the fifth-year option on Locker’s rookie contract, meaning Locker becomes a free agent after the upcoming season. If Locker is going to make big money next year, he’s going to have to earn it with a big season this year. If Locker keeps working his butt off, he may reap the financial rewards in March. But if he continues to be plagued by injuries, he may find himself just competing to be a backup somewhere. If he can’t stay healthy, it doesn’t matter how hard Locker works.

As I and many others have said, if this dude fails I cannot fault him. He's passionate and gives his all for the team. He wants to be great and he puts in the effort.

Unlike the last guy to wear #10.

His butt is now broken and he'll be out 4-6 weeks.

you can work your butt off but that has nothing to do with durability. If durability is an issue again for him this year and I do think it will be sad to say, nothing that tells me otherwise then he can say goodbye to his career in the nfl. We always hear he works hard in camp and is ready for big things then boom he goes down and there goes that theory.

Wouldn't it be ironic/strange/awful if Locker has a breakout year and then decides to test the free agency market?

It would be ironic, but I don't see it happening. Jake having a great year? Very possible. Jake testing free agency? As long as we make a fair offer for him, it won't happen. Based on nothing more than what I've observed of his character. Titans have paid Jake a lot of money for, really, not too much. Titans have shown patience with him. If given a fair offer I say Jake does the honorable thing and stays. ..... even if he is offered a bit more elsewhere.

Yeah he seems like the kind of guy who would be loyal to the franchise in that scenario. I mean, we're sticking with him this year when many other teams (especially with a new coaching staff) most likely would not have.

I was initially a big Locker fan. But the injuries have just completely put me off the guy. Even if he miraculously manages to stay healthy in 2014, I have zero faith he's going to be able to stay on the field consistently enough year in and year out to be a legitimate franchise QB. Hate to say it, but I think we're wasting our time.
