Let there be no doubt the Titans like Justin Hunter’s upside.

In a feature published Friday by the Nashville Tennessean, Titans wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson indicated that Hunter, the second-year wideout from Tennessee, has been showing promise.

“He can be the receiver that puts us in the playoffs, and helps us win our division,” Jefferson said, according to the Tennessean‘s Jim Wyatt. “With the growth he is going to go through, if he can keep progressing he can be the receiver that puts us over the edge. He has that much potential.”

In his comments, Jefferson added the caveat that Hunter is still young and that he is trying to pick up his second offense in as many seasons. However, Jefferson noted to the Tennessean: “I like the course he is on.”

Of Jefferson’s remarks, that might be the most significant — that Hunter is developing in a manner that is satisfactory to the Titans. Even if Hunter doesn’t become an elite difference-maker — the sort of player who can be a catalyst for a big jump in the standings — he can still help Tennessee if he continues to improve.

In 14 games as a rookie, Hunter hauled in just 18 passes, but four went for touchdowns, and he gained nearly 20 yards per catch. Those numbers alone are reason to perhaps wonder if more is to come from Hunter, and Jefferson’s praise is another good sign.

Hunter has always had a ton of potential. But I'm getting tired of these high potential guys not working out for us. Hopefully Hunter goes against the trend and explodes this year. I'll buy his jersey if he can hit 1,000 yards receiving.

He and Wright give me a lot of hope for the future.

I am looking at it from this angle. Hey guys, we have a couple great looking young receivers that are not injury prone. ............. knock on wood. So as long as they are progressing, we will improve.

Let's hope Shankey process to be durable.

That's a good gauge, Wright hit 1,000+ last year and I picked up his jersey in the off season. (Not because of that though lol)

Hunter tore his ACL in college. I know you didn't claim he is immune, but he is only one year in and you can't say he didn't work through injuries in college.

Well, my defense is ignorance. I don't watch college ball. Guess I was thinking injuries in the nfl like calico. We were all excited about him too.

He's looked good to me so far. Has had a few drops but has had a lot more catches and some great catches. I think once the game slows down he'll be a really good player. Just hope he keeps working.

It's good to hear about a player making strides rather than in the news or recovering from an injury. Good off season so far it seems.

Potential is worthless if it doesn't turn into production. Titans are well acquainted.

Hunter and Wright will be a dynamic duo, eventually. We still need that dependable 3rd WR that can grow with Hunter and Wright when Nate's time is up (hopefully no time soon). So this is the year for Preston to make his case, or we will have to move on from him.

Hunter can be special. But will he have a competent QB throwing his way? That remains to be seen.

At the same time, one major injury in college doesn't mean he is prone to injury. He has been healthy otherwise.
