This is what I'll never relate too.

Knowing that you are likely to not make it, but holding out that hope you would. Then, knowing that the guys beside you wouldn't make it and thinking......why would I make it and not them?

My grandfather stormed Normandy. Died the year following his return home from the war because he had rheumatic fever as a kid (the heart problem that disease causes).
What a sh*tty deal to survive the beach then plonk over dead as soon as you got home.
My other grandfather was in Los Alamos around that time. He was one of the A-Bomb scientists.

My grandfather was a POW when D Day rolled around. He was a navigator on a Lancaster bomber that was shot down. He bailed and landed in a tree.

My grandfather was shot in the heart but was saved by a metal cased bible. Still have it, and plan on keeping it forever....

He almost lost his leg due to gangrene when he was hit by arty. Tough as nails, but died from a heart attack in the 70s because a doctor on call didn't want to leave his baseball game. USA!

It is surreal to hold something that, essentially allowed you to exist. Also ironic in the sense it is religious text I don't believe in.

I don't, next time I am at home I will snag a photo. I don't move it around too much because it is obviously getting fragile.
