Of course we all know that draft rankings don't mean a thing, but just gives the "experts" something else to talk about.

I really do have a problem though with the logic of most of the "experts" who gave us a bad grade. Almost everyone of them have Lewan rated from the 5th to the 10th best player in the draft. So how can they give us a bad grade for sticking to our draft board and taking BPA at the 2nd most important offensive position. Do they not understand that the draft is about filling long term needs with the BPA. Plenty of them say that we have Roos so we didn't need Lewan. Do they not understand that Roos is an aging FA next yr. Without the Lewan pick then in 2015 we could easily be looking for a LT and a QB. You certainly aren't going to land both of them in a single draft. The Lewan pick grades as an A. Would be an A+ if he didn't have the off field baggage.

So those same experts who panned us for the Lewan pick because we didn't "need" him. Then say that we took Sankey too soon...we could have waited to get a RB later in the draft...we didn't take the RB the experts liked. Well again don't the experts see that we got the top rated RB on our board to fill our biggest need. You can't give this anything other than an A+ grade. Rotoworld has Sankey ranked #1 in terms of rookie fantasy football impact this yr. I sure hope he proves to be that impactful.

We then pick solid productive defensive players with our 4th and 5th rnd picks. In these rnds you are looking for guys who can give you instant impact on STs and solid depth with the hopes that they can be starters some day. I think Jones, Huff, and Williamson fit the bill. I grade our 4-5th rnds a B. Solid guys.

In the 6th rnd we get a QB who has played in a pro style offense, has a legitimate pro quality arm, and played against top notch competition. Is he our sure fire franchise QB of the future??? Who knows. But I'd much rather take a risk on a guy in the 6th rnd instead of taking a chance on a QB in the 2nd rnd. Nobody is a reach in the late rnds. All you can be is a value and from most draft "experts" Mettenburger was a value. If he busts out then no big deal. If he becomes a quality #2 QB then you got a good deal. If he becomes a quality starter then you have a steal in the draft. I give this pick a B+

When you grade a draft you really can't down grade a team on their late rnd picks because they are such long shots anyway.

I really have a feeling in 3 years this class is going to be one of the best in the league, but only time will tell.

I think these media guys are just so used to looking past us that they think they can pull opinions out their ass and no one will notice.

They also cater to the masses and tell the bigger fan bases what they want to hear.

Exactly, they aren't going to get a tonne of article views from grading us out highly.

We're not a fashionable team, no reason for a writer to stick their neck out and say they like our draft or FA or team or coaching staff, unlike big market teams. Main stream journalism is just political, catering to the majority gets them more views and money than true, honest, objective journalism.

No bias, that is for sure. I do wonder about some of his analysis.

Did he miss the Michael Oher signing?

This statement makes no sense at all.
    1. Casey may not be NT
    2. Jones is a fourth round pick, was not taken to start right away
    3. Teams generally like to carry more than one interior lineman
    4. He may have missed another FA signing, Al Woods
Well, he is spot on here. There are a lot of people who are very optimistic about Mettenberger.

I think a lot of the optimism on mett is more of a diss to locker than anything. He was a 6th round pick for a reason. I'm not saying he is bad, but he's a 6th round project. The issue is that we have a player that appears to be only slightly better than our 6th round pick starting for our team.

Part of it is the doubt that surrounds Jake but I think most of the hype is due to the fact that Mett isn't your typical 6th round pick. Had we taken someone like Garrett Gilbert people wouldn't be predicting doom for Locker. Mett is a guy with 1st-3rd round talent that we got in the 6th and he plays the most important position on the field, he's gonna get attention.

Only attention he is getting is from us. Not saying I hated the pick, but he probably is not on our 53 come season starting. He has a long ladder to climb at this point.

6th round pick, 2nd round talent.

Character and injury concerns will kill your draft stock, doesn't mean youre not a good player.

And he's not much of a project. Once he grows up some, and heals 100%, Mettenberger can push for an NFL starting job most places.
