Well we have along time before camp and need something to talk about besides 2015 rookie QBs. It will be interesting to see how the front 7/6 will look this year. I am including nickel defense as NFL defenses actually use nickel formations more than the base formation. So what do you think the front 7/6 will look like in terms of personnel? Or what should it look like if you prefer?

Base D -- One gap 3-4: The one gap 3-4 is not terribly different than some 4-3 formations and is more common than the two gap 3-4.

.....................................LDE Pito .................NT Woods ...........RDE/UT Casey
    ..........LOLB Ayers....................................................................................................ROLB/Elephant Morgan
    ...........................................LILB McCarthy ....................RILB Brown

This personnel group features more run stopping power. Also the LB formation allows for the speedy Brown to be protected from blockers better.

Nickel D -- 2-4 & 4-2: Not a big difference between these two formations. The guys that play OLB in the 2-4 can also play DE in the 4-2. The 2-4 just has the outside guys standing and spread more.

.................DE/OLB Wimbley .................DT Hill ..................DT Casey ..................DE/OLB Philips

    .........................................LB Foku ............................................LB Woodyard

This group prioritizes pass D. Foku is not great against the run but is good in pass coverage. Both Whiz and Horton have said they see newly signed Woodyard as nickel LB.

I don't see McCarthy beating out Woodyard in any package, same goes with Fokou. I also do not see Morgan beating out Phillips who was productive in the 3-4.

The rookie ILB will beat out McCarthy easily.

Completely different personnel in base and nickel (except for Casey) would be quite something. I'll believe that when I see it. Still, an interesting post and a good topic for discussion.

I want McCarthy to succeed, but he is the Jake Locker of the defense. Loads of talent, but not dependable.

And why I believe the rookie will be the starter within the year.

With Philips I do not see him playing that much. Morgan may not be the best pass rusher but he is strong in run defense.

I'm gonna say Martin finds a nice role moving back to the 34 like he was at Michigan.

Pito - best against run stopping
    Casey - best pass rusher
Martin - played zero last season when we went 3dl
Ayers - better at pass rush. Most likely will be our main 34 rusher
Klug - tweener that fits a 34 DE on the weak side.
Jones - could slide to the outside but I think he will be the key cog in the middle.
Brown - speed LB /cover with good rush possibilities. ILB.
    McCarthy - crutches
Morgan - might see snaps in a nickel role. More 43 than 34. Strong at POA. Decent rush
    Woodyard - nickel ILB
Woods - rotational NT or possible DE with jones opposite of him

I dont see a full-time NT on our roster, so I envision a game of musical chairs there all season.

As for DE's Im projecting Casey and Pitoitua as the starters.

I see the LB group as; Ayers - Brown - Woodyard - Wimbley
