2014 NFL Draft: Pick #178 - QB Zach Mettenberger

I like this pick. Its a later round so its a high quality/value pick, even after giving up two 7th round picks- often aren't usually significant at all. It gives Locker the benefit of the doubt this year and ZM can be that "project guy", who could develop into a start. And if it doesn't look like he'll work out, theres not harm in drafting a higher round pick next season. I was a little disappointed with the first pick but now looking at the draft as a whole, clearly the coaching staff had a plan and drafted their way, rather then drafting what many people perceive as our needs. We still addressed those needs but got great talent early. I especially like Sankey. And the more I think about Lewan- the more sense that pick makes.

 

"Looks to be a perennial all pro" eh? I don't think I would go that far. It's about VALUE.

6th round is no risk to take. If they had taken mettenberger in the first, I wouldn't be thrilled.

For a 6th round QB with a potential to be a starter, that is a bigger accomplishment than a top 10 rated OT who also MAY be good.

He could also be another Robert Gallery. You don't know. Nobody knows.

People like the mettenberger pick because it is no risk with a reasonably high ceiling. It's not that complicated IMO. Nobody is saying that he's the next star QB in the league.


It is a smart pick. There is ZERO potential that it is a bonehead pick. 6th rounders require no expectation of success. If lewan busts like most of the titans 1st rd picks do, then we are out a lot of value, that could have been spent a million different ways. No possible way the mettenberger pick bites them in the butt any worse than Rusty Smith or any other QB that sucks.
