I've been in countless QT debates over the years. And while I don't necessarily disagree with anything you are saying here. He at least does it well, IMO. Derivative or not his movies are entertaining as hell, for the most part. He doesn't have a single movie that was a complete dud. And like it or not, several are considered modern-day classics. There aren't many people out there who have been in the business as long as him that can claim his kind of track record. Of course you can argue that some of his BO success is simply due to the fact that his name is attached. But still, there's gotta be something to it to have the kind of success he has had for going on a quarter of a century.

I've seen many of the lesser-known films Tarantino has borrowed/stolen/whatever from, and have yet to find one that was as complete of a film or as entertaining/effective as what he put on the screen. Would I call him a visionary or a great innovator of original ideas? Not really. But the guy is a damn good filmmaker, although not for everybody.

Redbox got me caught up on some movies over the last couple of weeks:

    Gravity
    American Hustle
    The Wolf of Wall Street
    12 Years a Slave
    Dallas Buyers Club

Out of those "American Hustle" and "12 Years a Slave" were my favorites. No dogs among the others as each had their moments.

If Hollywood stayed out of the director's business in the last 20 years we would be talking about a lot of other names here other that QT. Even GDT sucks studio honcho d*ck every other film..
What QT has for going for him is that he's a big fan of great old films and he runs his own show without much interference from the suits.
He knows how to frame a film and he knows a decent story. His DPs are the best in the business - but his propensity for dialog overkill can be mind-numbing and I swear at times he lets Rob Zombie control the obligatory cursing quotas.
If he learned some self control in those depts the movies would be more rounded.
No matter how you slice things he is not Leone genius and his films are not as great as Leone's.

Again, I can't really disagree with anything you said. I still respect the hell out of him as a filmmaker though. And truth be told, he annoys the s*** out of me on a personal level. I will give you Leone. But what's silly to me is when people sit there and piss and moan that he stole the freaking eye-patch on Daryl Hannah from Thriller. I mean, really? I'm not even saying that he didn't steal it but why the hell does it matter? It's an eyepatch, lol. Should that take away from what Kill Bill is as a movie? (BTW I own and enjoy Thriller. But Kill Bill is the much better movie IMO.)

There are plenty of valid complaints about his films (over-the-top dialogue, "borrowing/stealing" ideas, tedious runtime). I don't begrudge anyone for having those complaints. But I do think there is a somewhat irrational hate out there for the guy in hardcore film buff circles. Many of whom I simply believe automatically hate anything popular or "mainstream". Like I said, I believe he is an excellent filmmaker, albeit not for everyone.

If you borrow an idea and actually manage to improve on it or take it another interesting direction, is your creation worthless and unnecessary? I guess to some people that's the case but I certainly don't look at it that way. (Note: I am definitely not saying he ALWAYS improves upon the original idea/theme)

They don't like it when I say that Carradine was my favorite Dracula of all-time.
Bullets bounce off his cape but he still ducks when you throw the gun at him..

Everything is derivitive and nobody creates in a vacuum.

Stepping back a bit: I liked Thor when I was a kid but Marvel Films has exposed him as a demigod with a HUGE learning disability. Kind of annoying now.

I was hoping TASM2 wouldn't suck...that they would have learned from the editing messes made in the first one. But if Gunny says it's dog squeeze then I'm likely to think the same.

    Let's hope Godzilla delivers.

It rained one day last year so I went and saw Movie43. 13 minutes into the movie I walk out demanding a refund. Manager said I saw half the movie and wasnt getting a refund. Long story short I called her district manager and got her fired.
