MOBILE, Ala. Much has been made of the fact that Vanderbilt wide receiver Jordan Matthews went to the extreme in readying for the Senior Bowl, as he requested tape of the North team defensive backs.

“I just look at that as being necessary because if you fail to prepare, you’re preparing to fail,” Matthews said. “A lot of people look at it as a big deal, but I just look at it as preparation. That’s what my parents have always instilled in me. My mom would always say proper preparation prevents poor performance, so that’s what I’ve always lived by.”

That’s not to say Matthews isn’t confident about his ability to become a number one receiver on the NFL level.

“Of course I think I can,” Matthews said. “But at the same time, potential will get you fired. So the biggest thing I’m trying to do is just continue to work and bring that potential out, and get to that point where I’m a number one receiver in the NFL.”

Matthews, who finished his career as the SEC’s all-time leader with 262 career receptions and 3,759 receiving yards, said he’s always carried a chip on his shoulder in order to motivate himself.

“I think my strengths are definitely my competitiveness, my willingness to prepare, that chip on my shoulder, and just that constant grind I’m willing to take in my approach to football,” Matthews said. “I never get complacent. I continue to work forward to whatever’s next.”

Injured Vol: University of Tennessee offensive tackle Ja’Wuan James suffered a slightly sprained knee on Monday and will not be able to participate in the Senior Bowl. The injury should keep him out of action for a couple of weeks.

Wish we had a good enough team to look for wants instead of needs but we need way more help in other areas before addressing wr.

Agreed. I'd take him in the 4th but he won't be there. Too many other needs to take him in the 2nd.

Imagine how much this board would flip out if we take another WR in the 1st or 2nd..

If we could trade down and pick up some more picks then I'd love to grab Matthews in the second. We would need to fill two of our main needs (NT/RT/Pass rusher) in FA first though.

    Wright/Matthews/Hunter would be beastly.

I think we stand pat this year and get a QB next season. I have no evidence for this but my gut feeling is that we give Locker once more season to prove if he is our guy or not. I
wouldn't be shocked to see us start the season with Locker/Fitztragic/Wilson on opening day.

Next year though I think we'll trade up RG3 style if Locker doesn't pan out.
