Titans coach Mike Munchak on Wednesday quashed a report that suggested he’d expressed an interest at Penn State, his alma mater.

According to a report in the Patriot-News earlier this week, Munchak would be a leading candidate should current coach Bill O’Brien leave Penn State for an NFL job. The report said Munchak, along with Vanderbilt coach James Franklin and Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano, had let it be known through “intermediaries” they would be curious if there was an opening.

    Munchak scoffed at the report.

“I did not reach out to anybody, and nobody did on my behalf. And I don’t have an agent,’’ he said. “They have a coach there, and I have a job here. So it’s just not true. I don’t think there is any merit to any of the three of us, I’m sure.”

The same report suggested Munchak was on the verge of getting the Penn State job following the 2011 season. Indications are that was never the case. Munchak had just finished his first year with the Titans, and he never interviewed for the job. The report also claimed the Titans’ unexpected push in the “NFC” playoff picture led the late Titans owner Bud Adams to secure his “then-rookie head coach.”

The Titans finished 9-7 in 2011, in the AFC, of course. Adams never considered parting ways with Munchak at the time.

Munchak’s job security is in question this season. His team is 6-9 heading into Sunday’s game against the Texans.

Munchak made it clear on Wednesday his focus is squarely on the Titans.

“I am fighting for this job, to make it work,’’ he said. “I am not looking for another job, and no one is looking on my behalf. I don’t know where (media) comes up with that kind of stuff.”

This wouldn't be the first time a coach publicly lied about being interested in and/or lobbying for another job. However, I'm actually inclined to believe Munch on this. I really didn't buy it when the story first came out. Just doesn't seem like it'd be Munch's style. He seems like the kind of guy who's going to be 100% focused on the job at hand rather than looking at options for if/when he is fired.

The guy that broke the story is an absolute clown. He is the guy that said Paterno was dead, when he wasn't and last go around with the Penn State job, he said both Nick Saban and Chris Peterson at the airport and Urban Meyer was touring the area with a realtor.

He writes whatever he wants under the guise of "an unknown source".

I would laugh at PSU's ******* for hiring a guy with three wins over teams with a winning record in two plus years.

Contractually I doubt he could say he was interested.

Hey, at least he would be somewhere where not allowing child molestation would be improvement.

I actually believe Mike Munchak would fair well at the college level.
