Titans running back Chris Johnson eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark earlier in his career, so topping 1,000 doesn’t excite him or fans nearly as much.

Still, Johnson said it’s important. This year, it’s no given.

Johnson has 820 yards through 13 games this season. At his current pace – averaging roughly 63 yards per game – he’ll finish the season with 1,009 yards on the season.

“It is definitely the standard for running backs in the NFL – 1,000 yards. Just to get 1,000 yards every year is a blessing. Coming in, you want to get way more than 1,000 yards,’’ Johnson said on Thursday.

“I am definitely surprised (it’s not more). There was a lot of hype and big expectations this year, but a lot of things didn’t go well and didn’t go right. But it’s a situation where we have three games to play, and I’m pretty sure I’ll get there.”

In his second NFL season, Johnson ran for 2,006 yards. In his first five NFL seasons, he topped 1,000 yards each time, finishing with 1,228 in ’08, 1,364 in ’10, 1,047 in ’11, and 1,243 in ’12, along with the 2,000-yard season in ‘09.

Johnson is on pace to total his third-fewest number of carries in a season.

Through 13 games, he has just 217 carries, which puts him on pace to finish with 267. During his 2,006-yard season, Johnson carried the ball 358 times. He had just 276 carries last season.

Running room might not be easy for Johnson or fellow running back Shonn Greene against the Cardinals on Sunday. The Cardinals are ranked third in the NFL in run defense, allowing just 84.5 yards per game.

“It’s going to be tough,’’ Johnson said. “But just like any other team we play, if we do what we’re supposed to do, and we get on our guys and handle the small things, we’ll be OK.”
