The Titans did more rotating of linebackers in Sunday’s loss to Denver than they had in any other game this year.

Titans coach Mike Munchak said the strategy was to keep linebackers fresh against a high-octane offense, but the rotation plan left at least one linebacker scratching his head.

Zach Brown, the second-leading tackler on the team with 102 tackles, said he didn’t understand why he was on the field for just 38 of the Titan’s 95 defensive snaps in a 51-28 loss to the Broncos.

“I’m kind of wondering myself,” Brown said. “You’ve got to keep your best players and playmakers on the field. That’s what you do when you play defense. You look at all the good defenses right now. They keep their best players on the field.”

Moise Fokou led the Titans linebackers with 65 snaps, followed by Brown (38), Akeem Ayers (33), rookie Zaviar Gooden (31) and Colin McCarthy (30). The big surprise was that Gooden – who hadn’t made a defensive tackle this year while playing sparingly in six games – saw almost as much time as Brown and Ayers.

“We wanted all four linebackers (in addition to Fokou) being comfortable playing a series so we could rest guys, so they couldn’t take advantage of us maybe being tired,” Munchak said. “We did the same thing with the (defensive line), so it had nothing to do with how the guys were playing. It was more about the reps we knew they were probably going to have to play.”

Titans safety Bernard Pollard was noticeably upset with Gooden after one play, a Broncos completion over the middle. But Munchak said he thought Gooden, who was credited with two tackles against the Broncos, did a respectable job overall.

“He was fine,” Munchak said. “He may have had one or two things, but — for the first time out there playing defense — we thought he was solid.”

Brown said he was expecting the linebacker rotation, since the team had been practicing that way all week. But that didn’t mean he agreed with it.

“I mean, any team, it should be your best players all time,” Brown said. “So I don’t know what was going on. They rotated and we still lost.”

It was obvious how poorly that plan backfired from the start....and of course the coaches made NO adjustments at the half for it.

We are a poster child for how bad coaching and poor/zero adjustments at the half will kill a team.

Good teams we play come out in the second half and look like different teams.....we seem to have no answer on offense or defense for them after seemingly having their number in the first half. It's pathetic.

Great idea. Keep the starter off the field so the back ups can stink it up.
