Colts could dink-and-dunk Titans

The last time the Titans played a game without safety Michael Griffin, they were nearly dinked-and-dunked to death.

Griffin missed the Titans’ contest against St. Louis on Nov. 3 with a quad injury, replaced by reserve strong safety George Wilson.

The Titans played a lot of soft zone coverage that day, partly out of respect for the Rams’ speedy receivers (such as Tavon Austin) and partly because Wilson is slower and less experienced at free safety than Griffin.

With Tennessee especially concerned about the deep pass, the Rams’ Kellen Clemens chewed the Titans up with underneath tosses. He threw 22 passes of nine yards or less in the air, completing 16 of them for 141 yards, per Pro Football Focus. Clemens went just 4-of-13 for 69 yards on anything longer than nine yards.

The Titans won that game, 28-21, but only after stopping the Rams on the Tennessee 26-yard line in the closing seconds.

So is there reason to assume the Colts would employ a similar strategy this Sunday, with Griffin suspended (assuming his appeal is turned down) and Wilson the likely replacement?

Absolutely. In Tennessee’s game Nov. 14 against Indy, the Titans – even with Griffin in the lineup – were extra careful not to allow the deep pass to T.Y. Hilton. So Colts’ quarterback Andrew Luck went with underneath routes all night, completing 17-of-22 passes of nine yards or less in the air, for 164 yards. Luck went just 2-of-9 for 35 yards on anything longer.

Luck’s top target was tight end Cody Fleener, who caught eight passes for 107 yards.

Assuming the Titans go cautious without Grffin, expect Luck to try to dink-and-dunk Tennessee to distraction once more. Why change what worked the first go-round, especially if Wilson has to line up a bit deeper than Griffin to guard against the long pass?

And what did Fitz do for the other 3 quarters?

Colts have been doing this for the last 72 years.

Fitz is the ultimate check down Charlie. If you hate Luck for doing it hate Fitz for it too. All the good QB's make their living on checking down, and why shouldn't they, its a smart strategy.

Difference is this is Luck's first option, not a last resort.

Well considering his track record, maybe we should do the same. Id love to be as lucky as the Colts. Mediocre roster that plays bigger than life more than half the time. Cheap team that finds ways to win.

For one time i'm actually cheering for Luck to be taken out of this game with a big hit. Not long term just this game. It's only fair. The NFL is trying to ensure that we lose this game by taking Griffin out against them. They adore the colts and it's bad for business if the Colts lose to us.
