Munch came to this job with 2 basic goals. Run the football and stop the run. He said as much. Jerry gray said when he first took over his main goal was getting bigger to stop the run. Well we are bigger.

    Let's look at the numbers.

    Rank in total rushing yards:

    2013-15th
    2012-21st
    2011-31st

    Average-22.3

    Rank in rushing defense:

    2913-26th
    2012-24th
    2011-24th

    Average 24.6

Major failure! Especially on the offensive side when Munch inherited a running back who just 2 years earlier ran for over 2000 yards.

Now some Jeff Fisher numbers for comparison.

In the playoff years of 99-2000-2002-2003-2008 We averaged
    11.8 in rushing yardage
    5.4 in rushing defense.

That's including Eddie George's last 2 years here when he was best average.

Now you say that's unfair those were playoff teams with more talent. Ok here are the averages in Fisher's 5, 8-8 seasons. 96-97-98-06-09.

    5th in rushing yardage
    11th in rushing defense.

I believe a NFL team has to have an effective running game to do well but I don't see it overshadowing a solid passing game, IMO.

Some will say that the focus for Fisher/Munch needed to be pass well and defend the pass. Their run-first offensive philosophy just might be a key reason this franchise has remained mediocre the last few seasons.

Of course, if the Titans had a QB who could do some of the things we're seeing out of the top ones in the league, their run-first mentality might be very different.

I wonder about that, Jeff...I wasn't around for the first few years of Mc9's career but my understanding was that it wasn't until much later in his career than anyone discovered his passing ability because the coaching staff were so hellbent on Martyball. It seemed like a great opportunity for a balanced attack yet we still saw EG pounding up the middle for no gain ad nauseum just to run a clock down ("playing to not lose").
If we had a Peyton Manning behind center would this team's coaching philosophy take advantage of it or would they make him their top handoff artist?

I'm a big fan of #9 but my opinion is McNair wasn't anything close to being an accurate passer the bulk of his career. I think Fisher handcuffed McNair because of this but, eventually, had no choice but to open things up. In the meantime, McNair had become a better passer though never one which a team could build a offense scheme around.

We can debate what is the best offensive philosophy for this team and the talent we have but nobody can deny that being 26th in the league against the run is a problem.

    This.

Oh yeah... and Munch beat Fisher. Who would you rather have? I'd rather have the guy that wins against the other.

Fisher sucks... Munch isn't proving he's much better, unfortunately.
