I guess working out and body building is another sport so i'll place this here.

We have belonged to our local YMCA for 6 years+. They are closing down at the end of the year so we cancelled our membership and went to the planet fitness close by.

The result is like night and day. Better and quicker workout experience and much cheaper. We paid $70 a month at the Y and are now paying $30 a month at PF. Actually it could only be $20 and i'll explain that in a second.

At the Y they have one of everything. One curl machine, one bench press etc. PF has 3-4 of everything. And because of their 2 popular work areas one a 30 minute workout and the other a 12 minute ab workout the other side of the building with all the equipment i use is almost empty like i have my own personal workout space. I have never waited to work on a machine.

Same with the cardio machines never have to wait for a bike, treadmill or stepper.

They have classes several times a day where for 30 minutes they help you work on a particular area like abs, chest, legs arms etc. So while they expressly do not allow personal trainers they offer that. The 30 minute total body workout is not bad and the 12 minute ab workout is not bad. they also have a class every day to help you do your own workout plan.

The PF in columbia has only been there for a month and a half so the equipment is brand new and looks and works great.

They keep the place clean and they have plenty of staff.

I have found that the Y is expensive compared to other places. We joined Anytime Fitness and like yours it is brand new with all new equipment. We looked at Planet Fitness but there isn't one close by

The negative is minor since the "black card" membership that i have for $20 a month is not worth it. You can bring one quest a day but i have none. My son is 9 and too young to go into the place.

You get 1/2 price on the drinks from their cooler but they are way too expensive for that ever matter. Vitamin water for example is $4.36 a bottle so half price is $2.18, still too high. As a black card member you get access to the massage chairs and the tanning machines but you have to pay extra to use them and i'm not there to play with my stick i'm there to work out.

When my black card membership runs out June 1st i'll go to the $10 basic.

The place is kid free which might bother some people but PF is designed to keep costs down while offering the most.

Another thing people like and some might dislike free food! One monday every month they offer all you can eat pizza and one tuesday every month bagels. I have yet to partake in those. they also offer free candy. Miny tootsie rolls which is nice if a diabetic(I am one) were to become hypoglycemic after a workout. I limit myself to one piece as i am heading out as a form of reward.

    I'm a member at PF. 10 bucks a month.

All new equipment, nice locker rooms, very clean. They do have that "lunk alarm" nonsense but it is whatever. Can't beat 10 bucks a month.

Has a sauna and tanning facilities also.

My only complaint is the hours. Gym should be open 24/7.

The problem with YMCA's is that they have to be everything to everybody. Because half the people pay nothing half the people pay double.

They offer all these classes, swimming pools and day care. Swimming pools are nice but they cost money and use space. You have to maintain them, pay for lifeguards, added insurance. PF doesn't bother with them so they have more room for equipment.
