Also, while we're still talking about this game... I feel like the Chargers lost this game for the same reason we lost to Houston... Conservative play calling at the end of the game.

They had 3rd & 10 with 2:20 left and they decide to run it??? All they did was force us to burn our last timeout. Rivers was 20/24 passing on the day. Odds are if he passes it will be completed. At worst, we keep one timeout. I thought their play calling is awful. I would've been passing on us nearly every play all game, but I guess they were scared of doing that after what happened against the Texans week 1.

Anyways... I'm glad they ran it.

    On Verner ---

Throwing at Richard Sherman is yielding a QB rating of just 30.1 this season. 2nd place among CBs. Best? The 23.3 when throwing at ALTERAUN VERNER. (stat via ProFootballFocus)

To take advantage of his running ability. Not just rushing but moving around.

Verner has been playing his tail off.

    3 turnovers in 3 games.

Well, the math disagrees with you. Most teams run on that last drive because they still have a chance at a first down on 3 runs, less chance for a turnover or a significant negative play (like a sack), and guaranteed to run clock and force the other team to burn it's time outs. They did it almost perfectly. When we got the ball back, we had no timeouts, the 2 minute warning would be burned on the first play and we had about 95 yds to go.

Everyone hates the prevent defense but they paid for blitzing us and running a standar 3 deep look. I mean, we had 2 WR's open for a TD on the last TWO plays of the game!!! No one should be singled up in that situation!!! And even with them playing a terrible D, we still needed a 34yd completion with only 15 seconds left! Their D calls were terrible!

And what's the worst that could happen? We could sack Rivers and strip the ball. Then you think throw a quick 3 step drop...but then the ball could get tipped at the LOS and intercepted for a pick 6. Or you have a couple of incompletions and leave us with a lot more time on the clock, essentially 2 timeouts with the 2minute warning coming later, and better field position potentially.

Now, we got burned for the game tying td the week before but the odds of driving the ball 95yds in 2 minutes with no timeouts are not exactly good!

On the flip side, I think it's totally valid to think, our defense (from the Chargers mentality) isn't very good and we need to win this on offense and not give them the ball back so forget running clock, our goal is a first down and then we burn the clock and win the game. However, if you take that route, I think you have to throw it on first down!

I wasn't claiming they should pass it every play on that final drive. I was talking about the rest of the game... and not passing on 3rd & 10 is a failure. I guess relying on their defense to stop a long 2 minute drive with no timeouts isn't a bad idea, but I always like to go for the jugular. 3rd & 10 you pass it; just be cautious and take the incompletion if necessary. Worst case scenario is the other team has an extra timeout. Low risk, high reward... it's exactly what we should've done when we held the 24-16 lead in Houston. We were way too conservative.

I've noticed that mainly when he gets sacks its due to play action. Turning his back and bad pass protection obviously affect this. Being able to make reads as soon as he has the ball is a definite benefit of being in the shotgun formation. It would be nice to see more of the read option incorporated, Locker showed he can run by people at this level. But on the other hand, teams are limiting the productivity of such plays. It could work for us though as i'm not sure i've seen us run anything but the pure option this year.

Very true, he's always been an under center guy but I like his play out of the shotgun so far.
