Wimbley a missing man against Chargers

    Here’s a look at a handful of significant snap counts from the Titans’ 20-17 win over the Chargers on Sunday:

    Defensive end Kamerion Wimbley was on the field for just six of the Titans’ 59 defensive snaps. He had fewer snaps than defensive ends Keyunta Dawson (9) and Karl Klug (9). Somehow I don’t think this was what the Titans coaches had in mind this offseason when they said fewer plays would mean a more productive Wimbley. Wimbley, who is in the second season of a five-year, $35 million contract, has been on the field for just 57 of the team’s 192 defensive snaps (30 percent) this season, posting four tackles and a sack.

    With the Titans going to three wide-receiver sets more often, Kendall Wright saw his most extensive action of the season. He was in on 45 of the Titans’ 69 offensive snaps, was targeted six times and caught all six of those passes for a season-best 11.8-yard average. Wright had only seen 32 snaps in Week Two and just 19 in Week One. On the other hand, Kenny Britt saw a season-low 38 snaps against San Diego. He was targeted five times but didn’t come up with a reception, dropping two passes and committing two penalties.

    Defensive tackle Jurrell Casey increased his workload that much more on Sunday, due to the absence of injured Sammie Hill. Casey was on the field for 57 of the team’s 59 defensive snaps and was a disruptive force in the run game, while also batting down a pass. Casey has been the team’s most consistent and impressive defensive player through three games.

    Linebacker Zach Brown was on the field for just 32 of the Titans’ 59 defensive snaps and was credited with just one tackle. Brown had racked up some impressive numbers in the team’s first two games, registering a combined 23 tackles and two sacks. He’d also rarely left the field in the first two contests, playing 124 of the team’s 135 snaps.

    Third safety George Wilson saw extensive action for the second straight week, as he was on the field for 35 of 59 defensive snaps. Wilson, who was signed in part because of his ability to cover tight ends, pitched in against Chargers tight end Antonio Gates on Sunday. He was part of the group that helped Gates from getting out of control, as Gates finished with five catches for 55 yards and a touchdown.

    Yeah I noticed Brown left the game an awful lost yesterday, wonder if there's an undisclosed injury? Not sure why we wouldn't want our best LB on the field.

    We used our personel to match up with the past but our DL had to be a unit that could keep ppl off our 2nd level since a lot of the time we had a nickel back or a 3rd S in place of a LB. I think this is why Wimbley saw fewer snaps though I'm surprised it was THAT little!

    I suspect either Brown has a minor injury or that after the first drive, they decided to go with Wilson on more of the TE coverage. Brown's strong suite is chasing ppl down, not taking on blockers head on so I think they used Ayers more since he's more stout. Not a knock on Brown, but I think we will see this a lot this season with certain personel groupings playing more for matching up purposes for how they want to defend certain teams. Working well so far!

    And I must say it's a nice change from when teams used to gash us running on our Nickel sets!
