Schwenke not yet on Titans’ radar

Titans center Rob Turner has had his share of ups and downs through the season’s first two games. But it doesn’t sound as if the Titans have any immediate plans on getting rookie center Brian Schwenke more involved in the offense.

Schwenke, a fourth-round selection last April, was part of the starting center competition during the offseason, but a hamstring injury during training camp effectively ended his chance at the job. He’s healthy now, but has been inactive for the Titans’ first two games, with Chris Spencer serving as the team’s center/guard replacement.

“We don’t see (Schwenke playing), not right now,” Titans coach Mike Munchak said. “I think he’s working in practice to get better definitely in case an opportunity comes up. Right now, that’s not something that’s on our radar. He needs to keep getting better because obviously if there’s an injury, he’s definitely in that discussion of playing.”

Turner suffered back-to-back penalties during Sunday’s loss to Houston, on a series that led to a safety on the Titans. He hasn’t graded out well, according to Pro Football Focus, as his -5.3 rating ranks Turner last among NFL centers who’ve played at least 50 percent of their team’s snaps.

“I thought he actually played pretty good throughout the (Houston) game minus the penalties,” Munchak said of Turner. “That part was discouraging, but I think the rest of it — on the road, handling the sound two games in a row, dealing with a young quarterback, a new right guard, a new left guard (was good).

“There’s a lot going on out there. I think he’s managed all that well, and he’s been solid for two games as the line’s been coming together. It’s been hard because (tackle David Stewart) hasn’t been practicing for the last two weeks, so he’s not getting enough reps. There’s a lot of things we’re still working our way through to be as good as we want to be. We’re not there yet.”

Should never have let Velasco go.. He's been very solid for us the entire time he was here. Yeah it saves money, but center is too important of a position to have a bum playing. Maybe we could have at least traded Velasco to a team like Pitt or someone who needed a center due to an in-season injury.

Now we're stuck with this Turner clown until Schwenke is ready.. :irked:

The team lands what they said was the best center prospect in the draft and he's not even active on Sundays. I don't understand this organization.

Same thing with Hunter. They said they landed the best WR prospect and yet he doesnt even get to play!

I know dude. I remember them saying they would have taken Locker #1 overall in 2011. They had Hunter as their highest rated WR if I remember correctly (2nd at worst), and tried to trade back into the first round to get him. We finally get him, and he comes into the season at 5th or 6th on the depth chart.

We are drafting for the future.. pretty bold move when the entire organization's jobs are on the line this season.

    This past draft:
    1. Chance Warmack - starter
    2. Justin Hunter - inactive some games, 5th - 6th on the depth chart.
    3. BWW - no higher than 4th on the depth chart.
    3. Schwenke - inactive, 3rd on the depth chart.
    4. Gooden - inactive, though injured. Wouldn't be any higher than 2nd behind Ayers/Brown.
    5. Edwards - 3rd-4th on the depth chart.
    6. Whooten - cut.
    7. Stafford - cut (I think), last option at safety if still on the team.

Outside of Warmack, this draft has done diddly-squat so far. I think it will be a good class 2-3 years from now, but our staff might not have that kind of time.

This is a pretty typical draft. If you end up with a bunch of 3rd-5th rounders starting for you then you know the season is not going well.

Stafford is still on the team, though it would 2 or maybe 3 injuries at safety for him to start. I could even see ATV moving back there and Campbell starting at CB instead of Stafford starting.

Im surprised you'd say that, Turner is better than Velasco.
