Why Titans can make the playoffs

Chris Johnson's reputation took a hit last season, but the Titans' chances at the postseason start with him.
Opportunity is knocking in the AFC. The conference is represented by only six of the top 16 teams in the current ESPN Power Rankings and has eight of the bottom 11 teams on that list. This disparity means it might not take much of a jump in performance to move a borderline AFC club into bona fide playoff contention.

One team that could be in prime shape to take advantage of this is the Tennessee Titans. Mike Munchak's squad finished 6-10 last season, but a closer look at their metrics from both last season and their impressive Week 1 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers illustrates a viable postseason path for the Titans.

That path begins with Chris Johnson and the running game. Johnson's reputation took quite a hit when he posted a total of 45 rushing yards in the first three games of 2012, but his numbers were vastly improved the rest of the season. Johnson ended up posting an 8.9-yard mark in the good blocking yards per attempt (GBYPA) metric that gauges a rusher's productivity on plays when he is given good blocking (roughly defined as when the offense does not allow the defense to disrupt a rush attempt). That total ranked tied for sixth in the league overall and was tied for fourth among backs with at least 100 good blocking rush attempts.

Johnson did struggle some in the GBYPA category in the game at Pittsburgh (4.7 GBYPA), but Tennessee's offensive blockers did manage to post a 46.2 percent good blocking rate (GBR) against one of the best rush defenses in the NFL. This bodes well for this blocking wall to hold its own against other opponents and give Johnson more than his share of breakaway chances.

Quarterback Jake Locker is not yet a proven commodity and does have some weaknesses in his game, but he has been very good in two areas.

First is rushing ability. According to ESPN Stats & Information, since the beginning of the 2012 season, Locker has a 7.78 mark in the clutch-weighted expected points added on rush attempts category. This measures how effective a quarterback's rushes were, and Locker's total was ninth among qualifying quarterbacks.

Second is his decision-making prowess. Last season, Locker posted a 0.6 percent total in the bad decision rate (BDR) metric that measures how often a passer makes a mental error that leads to a turnover opportunity for the opposing team. It is incredibly rare for a quarterback to land under the 1 percent mark in this metric, and Locker's total placed him No. 1 on the 2012 BDR list. He is off to a good start in this area in 2013, as he had zero bad decisions against Pittsburgh.

These traits are a major reason why, when he is on his game, Locker is quite capable of posting quality numbers. This was the case in the game against the Steelers, and it led to Locker tallying a 61.5 mark in ESPN's Total QBR metric (ranking 15th in Week 1). Even if he only stays at or near this level for the course of the season, it will be just the tonic the Titans' passing attack needs to get this offense moving.

Tennessee's defense has its share of strong suits, especially in the areas of impact plays.

This unit finished tied for ninth in sacks last season (39) and showcased its pass-rush prowess in Week 1 by racking up five sacks against the Steelers.

The Titans' defense also finished seventh in the league in interceptions in 2012 with 19, and snagged a pick against Pittsburgh.

But the most relevant stat from this perspective is Tennessee's 3.1 percent forced BDR (a metric that measures how often quarterbacks made bad decisions when facing this defense) from 2012. That mark ranked second in the league and indicates this group knows how to get opposing quarterbacks to make errors.

The Titans combined this trio of traits with an ability to shut down the long passing game, ranking fifth in the league in stretch vertical YPA allowed (SVYPA, a stat that tracks productivity on aerials thrown 20 or more yards downfield) last season. Against Pittsburgh, they allowed zero yards on three pass attempts at this depth level.

Tennessee gets to utilize these strengths against what looks to be a favorable schedule. The Titans have a home game against the New York Jets in Week 4, home and away matchups against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Weeks 10 and 16, and a road game at Oakland in Week 12. Those four teams have significant personnel issues, especially at quarterback, and the Titans should be the favorites in each of those contests.

Add those to home games against Kansas City and Arizona and it offers a likely road to four or five wins. Combine that with four wins in the Titans' other nine games, and it should equal a 9-7 or 10-6 record that could very well be strong enough to qualify this team for an AFC wild-card berth.
