    I think you're confused.

I said Campbell will find his way onto the field, then someone said Verner is the best CB, and I said why is McCourty always ahead of him on the depth chart and a captain.

Donnie Nickey was a special teams captain. Every team has that one bum who is made a special teams captain.

McCourty is the only true CB we have on the roster. He may not have great stats with picks, but he shuts down the other team's #1 WR damn well better than ANYONE else on the roster could. ATV may make a few more flashy plays, but it's ruined by how many catches he gives up as WRs blow right past him.

Some things about our team are debatable.. arguing that little-ass ATV is better than our closest thing to a shutdown corner, McCourty, is not. [IMG]

He doesn't "shut down" anything. And doesn't do it better than Verner.

What he does is gives a huge cushion to every WR he faces, so he keeps them in front of him. It's hardly effective. So since he doesn't get beat over the top, you guys seem to think he's good. While he's getting killed underneath over and over again due to his soft coverage.

You're right. This isn't debatable. Yet somehow you're trying to make a case for something those of us that watch know isn't true.

Since you guys threw out the Donnie Nickey was a captain thing, how about this:

    Jake Locker is a captain.

    It hardly means you're good.

He didn't run at the combine or his pro day.

Campbell will never get his skills up. It's not brain surgery to play CB, if he hasn't fiqured it out yet he never will. His game speed sure doesn't look elite.

I may have been looking at projections by mistake, but the dude can still fly nonetheless. His speed is already in a top tier, but when you take into account that the dude is a 6'3" MONSTER,. he flies. Show me another 6 foot 3 defensive back with the same kind of speed. Inb4 the guys on the Seahawks.. they are tall but don't have the same kind of speed.

Imagine Brandon Browner with Tommy Campbell speed..

    Toplel.

Put 5 foot 10, slow Verner on Andre Johnson (or any #1 WR for that matter) and see what happens. You can't be serious. McCourty is the only thing keeping our secondary from being at an all-time low.

I like how you get on him for giving the WRs a cushion.. news flash, that isn't McCourty's call. That is all on the defensive coordinator and defensive schemes. McCourty doesn't just decide to play 10 yards off..

McCourty is more fit to play press coverage than ATV is.. if ATV tries to press someone, he gets blown past. Sorry. Too slow, too small. He's no Finnegan. Stay in the Nickel Package ATV. The only reason we might play him outside is because we're desperate for a #2 CB. Campbell's body is a PERFECT fit for press coverage, so sorry if some of us are really hoping he'll become good.

Jake Locker pretty much has to be a captain.. he's the QB. He is the field general, the leader of the team whether he's good or not. Being a Captain is also more about leadership skills than by playing ability. Why do you think CJ isn't a captain? He's clearly one of our best players. :whack:

... why is it always this?

Like someone said that Julio Jones would beat Verner/McC/etc... Uhhh... yes. Andrew Johnson beats EVERYONE. So acting like it's a knock that Verner would get beat is silly.

Stop using bad examples if you want to make a point. Let me guess- Calvin Johnson would also beast on Verner? Wait! Along with every other CB in the NFL?! I can't believe it!

It actually IS McCourty's call. I'm not talking about the initial cushion at the line. I'm talking about when he's running with a WR... he always plays deep. Verner doesn't. Verner is all over WRs when they make a catch. McCourty shows up about 2 seconds late... every time. But hey, at least he didn't get beat...

The difference is- Verner actually plays with physicality for press. McCourty is too soft for it.

    Thanks for arguing my point.

McCourty plays like Finnegan did.. he may not be making picks and great plays on the ball all the time, but he contains them fairly well. McCourty is no god, but he is the most solid CB we have in my opinion.

I'll agree that Verner plays a bit more physically, and with a bit more heart. I don't mind that he might draw a few flags, but what hurts him is his size and speed. At 5 foot 10, he is simply a mismatch against WRs. Yes, a 2 inch difference, especially when the short dude lacks the speed, is a very noticeable difference. McCourty is a better match-up against WRs, and even though he might play with 90% motor, his physical build allows him to outperform Verner.

On the other hand, Verner is a PERFECT player to have as our Nickleback. He'll be matched up against TEs and Slot WRs, and he'll still be on the field quite often to make plays. I love Verner, he just has to play his role.

I'm not sure what you mean by this one.. a bad player can potential get a captain position because he is the QB.. That's not the case for the special teams captain. The special teams captain has to be a beast at what he does. Donnie Nicky must have been that.
