Coach Mike Munchak said Marc Mariani (shoulder) would be reevaluated later this week, but the receiver/returner’s chances of starting the year on the Titans roster appear to be getting slimmer.

The four options are as follows:

—The Titans could place Mariani on injured reserve, which means he’d be done for the season.

—The Titans could reach an injury settlement with Mariani and waive him.

—The Titans could place him on injured-reserve recall, which means that he’d be eligible to start practicing after six weeks of the regular season and would be eligible to play after eight weeks. But before the Titans could place Mariani on injured-reserve recall, he would have to be part of the initial 53-man roster from the time final cuts are announced on Saturday until next Tuesday. That means the Titans would have to cut someone else in order to keep Mariani for those four days.

—The Titans could simply keep Mariani as part of their regular 53-man roster, figuring he won’t be out long with the injury and will still help them for the bulk of the season.

It used to be that we had so many weak receivers that it was easy to keep a WR/return guy as developmental prospect, but this year our WR options might are strong and game ready - nice problem to have. I really like Mariani but I'm guessing odds are long since we have so much potential at wideout slot - and I'm also thinking an extra roster spot might go to Battle.

With Washington, Wright, Britt, Hunter, Williams, Preston - it's hard to see Mariani ever seeing field as a wideout (at least based on what I've seen so far unless he's better as a slot type guy where maybe we have more guys that lineup on the outside). So he's probably going to have to primarily be seen as a returner now - but he was very good at it before the injury.

We need a return specialist, and our two best returners are Drey and Mariani. We're definitely keeping CJ, Greene, and Battle. I don't see us keeping 4 running backs.

Keep Britt, Nate, Wright, Hunter, Williams, (I got it right this time, JCB :)) Preston, and Mariani as the return specialist. If they REALLY don't want to keep 7 WRs, cut either Williams or Preston. One good preseason game vs backups did not guarantee Preston's spot. At least not in my book.

We wouldn't keep him as a wide out, other than listing him as that on paper. His only hope is to make the roster as a returner. That being said, its hard for an NFL team to justify keeping one guy for the sole purpose of returning kicks, especially with the new rules in place, when there is so many other talented guys they would rather keep on the roster.

I honestly see us waiving him.

I don't see us keeping 7 WRs. Mariani was great for 2 years, but injuries are a bit_h to an NFL career. He will land somewhere that is thin on WRs if we release him and get more of an opportunity to catch the ball in a game. He was shaping up to be a Wes Welker-type guy last preseason before he got hurt. D-Rey is already taking more knees than last year; I think he is pretty solidified as the return man.

Rusty Smith or Marc Mariani? I'd pick MM, because he'd play every week. I'd go with two QBs and worst case scenario, you sign Kerry Collins* to play a few weeks while Locker/Fitz healed.

    * okay, maybe not KC, but there are serviceable weekly substitutes out there.

I'd thought he could go on the kind of IR where he could possibly return without being part of the original 53-man roster. Those four days complicates things in a big way.

I think now they'll waive him. They always have the option to bring him back after the first week.

I cannot see them placing him on the IR. Two years in a row on the IR all but means his career is over.

I hate it but I see MM getting an injury settlement and being waived. If this happens, I bet he goes to Fish and St Louis

No way they waive Mariani, he will be kept on the 53 man roster.
