Asked if he was too hesitant running the football last season, Chris Johnson hesitated.

Perhaps it was because the Titans running back didn’t want to offend any returning offensive linemen. Even coach Mike Munchak admitted Johnson might have been slow hitting the hole because on some plays there was no hole.

“Some of it last year was a little more leakage than expected at the point of attack at times,’’ Munchak said. “Or him thinking he may have had to get a bigger play than was there, not settling for second-and-six.”

Great running backs, Munchak said, “always feel they can do something special with the ball and they’re not content with what’s there sometimes. I think he’s out of that mode though.”

Johnson looked out of that mode in the preseason opener against the Redskins, taking his second and final carry of the game 58 yards for a touchdown.

Running backs coach Sylvester Croom has stressed hitting the hole faster, Johnson said.

“Any time you have room, you can always be decisive and just hit the hole,” he said.

Johnson played behind a makeshift line last season, when he rushed for 1,243 yards. The Titans added several new linemen in the offseason.

He refused to say the holes weren’t there a year ago, however.

“I’ll just say me and my offensive lineman are meshing well,” he said.

It was nice to see CJ hit the line faster vs the skins. I noticed it, was the most pleasing thing of the game. I thought CJ looked great.

Also using some sense in not being lured into a baited question like that.

He only had two carries, hard to gather much from that. It's good that one of them was a huge TD though

Me too. He really was never the problem. Don't get me wrong, I think he let the blocking (or lack thereof) affect the way he hit the hole as the article describes, but that would never have been an issue if the blocking wasn't legendary awful. CJ's style dictates that he can look like one of the worst backs in the league without adequate blocking, and one of the all-time greats with good blocking. I'm ready for the latter again!
