mocks are the time to experiment that's why you always get a loaded team because everyone is trying to think of different strategies and see what works best for them

if everyone did their normal draft day strategy the rosters would look totally different

True. I tend to try to get a feel for where people are going. I normally have my targets preset and try to get best value along with forcing myself to have to take another player when the guy I would like is not there. Then I look at each pick after to see how well that team would be IMO. Sometimes it's a rough team that you don't feel very confident in and it's good to keep those in mind during my real drafts.

My greatest fear in FF is free balling my draft to disaster.

Well I mean that's why you just have to keep experimenting. Change it up every mock, different players, positions, or even a whole new strategy. Really the easiest thing to do before your draft is take the top 30 QB's, about 50 RB's and deep sleepers you may have, and the same for WR then rank each position in tiers. It really helps me out draft day and I don't get nervous as much when I can look at 1 piece of paper and know where I stand. Add some notes to the side of each player so you don't forget any key stats and you're good to go. The draft is getting a bit too hyped now, it can put you in a great position for the season but it's all about managing your team after the draft.

The closer to the start of the season the better. For purposes of know which rookie Rbs are starting after pre-season (Alfred Morris last yr) and to prevent teams from wasting picks on random freak injuries from camp or pre-season game, plus when Peyton decides to get neck surgeries, don't waste picks on him. We had our draft last weekend in Aug in '11 and Peyton didn't announce he wasn't playing until Sept

As for my earliest draft, I have never drafted a real league for $ before Aug. but I have started doing mock drafts as early as April, like week of the draft

Next so many picks after Wilson:
    Reggie Wayne
    Jason Witten
    Tom Brady
    Le'Von Bell
    Reggie Bush
    Matthew Stafford
    Danny Amendola
    Antonio Brown
    Darren Sproles
    Tony G
    Eric Decker (me)
    Colin Kaepernick
    RG III
    Pierre Garcon
    Torrey Smith
    Tavon Austin
    Hakeem Nicks
    Vernon Davis
    Montee Ball
    Ahmad Bradshaw (me)

I did highly debate taking Reggie Wayne but decided I needed a RB2 on the roster. Rather roll dice on Wilson than one of those rookies or Reggie Bush (hurt) Darren Sproles (not a ppr league).

Given the players, who would you have taken? (keep in mind I had Peyton and Jimmy Graham so don't need QB or TE)

I mainly went with Decker thinking either he or Welker could get hurt in preseason and then I have one of them. I really wanted the QB/WR combo. Wanted Demaryious Thomas then Manning but decided I really wanted Jimmy Graham.

Naw I completely understand that the draft happens. I'm no more critiquing it than a personal view.

I probably would have taken sproles or bell, though each have their upside/downside. I was just passing along what I've heard about Wilson lately.

Wilson does have deep potential and I myself has thought long about the possibility of taking him in my personal leagues.

I hear ya. Was just curious who you would've taken in his spot. I did debate bell highly as well but felt more comfortable with Wilson having 1 year in pros. I took my full 90 seconds every pick lol.

Overall I feel pretty good about Peyton-Welker-J.Charles-J.Graham-49ers D consistently starting 5/9 spots. Getting Graham was a major portion of my strategy.

Am I the only one who waits until the final two rounds to draft DEF/K?

The only defense I'd consider taking early this year would be Seattle... if I get to round 7, my team is already stacked, and I don't like the value of the players available (but like players that will be available next round and beyond), I would likely draft Seattle. Otherwise, I am waiting until round 14 - unless a solid DEF falls to round 10-12.
