Jared Cook may be gone, but don’t try to tell Titans offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains his tight end group has slipped.

He believes the opposite is the case, now that Delanie Walker, Craig Stevens and Taylor Thompon are the top three players at the position.

“This is probably the best group since Alge (Crumpler) and Bo Scaife,” said Loggains, who’s been with the Titans for eight years. “I feel really good about having three guys that can do a lot of different things. Also all three of them can be in-line blockers, point-of-attack blockers, and all of them have good speed.”

Crumpler and Scaife played together in 2008 and 2009 for the Titans.

None of the current three has ever caught as many as 30 passes in a single season. However, Walker and Stevens have established themselves as two of the better blocking tight ends in the NFL, and Thompson developed quickly as a blocker last year.

The blocking aspect should be very important for a team trying to reestablish a powerful and consistent running attack.

“It’s critical,” Loggains said. “That’s what makes this offense go. Once you lose a point of attack blocker — and Craig struggled last year and got banged up — you lose a huge part of your offense.”

Asked what kind of progress Cook made as a blocker during his four seasons with the Titans, Loggains chose not to get into specifics.

“I’m not going to comment on Jared,” Loggains said. “Jared’s a really good player. I’m really excited about the deal he got in St. Louis and I wish him the best of luck.”

Best TE since Crumpler and Scaife? That's not saying much.
