There are a lot of people on this board advocating that we go defensive playmaker in the first and draft a guard (Warford) in the second round.

Music City Miracles posted an article today ranking the guards

    http://www.musiccitymiracles.com/2013/4/21/4250688/my-top-ten-2013-nfl-draft-rankings-offense

With the Eagles, Lions, Bengals, Cards, and Jets all drafting in front of us in the second and needing help on their offensive line, I could see a scenario where there is a run on interior lineman before our second pick. Not to mention teams like Chargers, Rams, Steelers, Cowboys, Bears, Vikings, and Packers picking after us in the first. This happened in the 08 draft when we needed receivers and there was a huge run on WRs (8) right before our pick and we settled for tweener Jason Jones.

We could go from having an elite blue chip lineman like WARmack solidifying our line to having to settle for the 6th best guard or even waiting until the third or fourth round because the value isn't there. I've seen several mocks with Warford being drafted as a late first round. I have 0% faith in Munchack and Matthews ability to "coach players up", even on the offensive line. If they had that ability, wouldn't they have done that over the last 3 years? (we've had terrible line play and the same core players over that period of time)

I seriously doubt six guards are picked in the first 39 picks. I just don't see it.

Someone might pick Justin Pugh because he played LT at a high level and was really good at the Senior Bowl, but the odds of guards being picked ahead of the WRs grouped in the late first and early second just isn't likely.

The most guards that have gone in the first 40 picks in the last ten years was in 2002 when Kendall Simmons, Andre Gurode and Toniu Fonoti were taken within the first 40 picks.

Historically, it looks like the third round is when the bulk of quality guards start to really fly off the board.

2012: Josh Leribeus, Brandon Brooks, Tony Bergstrom
    2011: John Moffitt, Will Rackley
2010: Jon Asamoah, John Jerry, Shawn Lauvao, Mike Johnson
2009: Louis Vasquez(a weak guard class overall)
2008: Jeremy Zuttah, Chad Reinhart, Oniel Cousins

I'd be willing to trade back up into the late portion of the second round to jump over the teams you mentioned, but I'd pass on one at 40.

In addition to the guards, there are an equal number or more of highly rated tackles. How many offensive linemen will go in the first two rounds? Seems to me that several teams looking OL will opt for tackles in the 1st or early 2nd rounds.

It's a chance I am willing to take. Our defense has absolutely no playmakers. Our offense does. And with us already strengthening our interior line with Levitre guard isn't as big a need as it was before free agency.

The question about our staff "coaching up" offensive line players I think has more to do with the players on the roster than the coaching. I don't think any of us would argue that Roos (2nd) and Stewart (4th) have become legitimate starting tackles in the league. Both were hand picked by Munchak and became highly effective.

I honestly could see Cooper falling to first 3 picks in the 2nd

Long could come off ahead of Warford. It's stupid because Warford is the better guard prospect but Long can play tackle and has genetics on his side.

Fluker could be taken by a team looking to start him out at guard.

Again Warmack is the best player and lowest risk pick in rd 1. You will have a nice selection of Wrs and defensive players from pick 39-100.

I like the fact that we brought in Frederick from Wisconsin. He has been a solid starter for them for several years and has started a full season at both guard and center. He did not test well at the combine in terms of being really explosive, but your interior OL types don't have to be that explosive. I like him as a 3rd or 4th rnd pick just like Barrett Jones. Not certain plug in starters, but guys who could compete for a starting spot along side the vets we have brought in.

I will have no problem if we try to draft the best playmakers on the board with our 1st and 2nd rnd picks and then look to add OL competition.

I fully support going defensive play maker in the 1st, then taking a Guard in the 2nd.
