Titans wide receiver Kendall Wright goes way back with Robert Griffin III.

As his college teammate at Baylor, he watched Griffin turn into a Heisman Trophy winner and then become one of the faces of the NFL as a rookie last year as the Washington Redskins quarterback.

Wright shared a secret about his high-profile buddy, who has fans in the nation’s capitol buzzing.

“He hasn’t gotten big-time,” he said. “But he told me one time he tried to go to the mall and disguise himself in Washington, with a hat and sunglasses. It didn’t work.”

Griffin won’t be able to sneak into Thursday’s preseason game against the Titans at LP Field either. He’s still recovering from the torn ACL he suffered in last year’s playoffs.

Griffin has been working in non-contact 7-on-7 drills at training camp, but he’s not expected to play at all in the preseason.

“I know him personally and if it was up to him he would want to play regardless, even though it’s just a preseason game,” Wright said. “That’s just how he is. Even if it was to get some handoffs, he likes to compete. But it sounds like he’s going to have to be patient.”

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said he planns to play his starters 10-15 plays on Thursday. Washington will start quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Wright thinks Griffin will be more careful when he returns to action, but just as good.

“I know from experience of playing with him, he won’t run the ball unless he has to. He’ll stay in the pocket and throw it all day,” Wright said. “But I have no doubt he’ll get back to being the player he was before (the injury).”
