We are not in a position where two or three FA pick-ups will make us a Super Bowl team, if we can get a few second-teir guys signed to reasonable contracts and work through the draft, we could build a team that can contend for the next decade with VY under center. You don't need stars at every position, if you get one or two stars then put some above average talent around them you can compete for a lot longer than if you sign two or three players to huge contracts only to have to purge your team two or three years later.

If they do well the next few years and Alex Smith does live up to his draft position, he's going to be tough to re-sign when his contract comes up, then where will they be?

Why do people keep acting like we're so far away from being a super bowl team? Nobody thought the Steelers were a super bowl team the year they made it. Nobody thought the colts were a super bowl team. Nobody thought WE were a super bowl team in 1999.
We have 3 glaring weaknesses, and the Colts have many more than that.

    1. Reynaldo Hill (possibly has a better player sitting behind him)
    2. Lamont Thompson (possibly has a better player sitting behind him)
    3. Passing game (vince only gets better)

So. What do we really need? Were these needs available to be filled? :)

We were considered the hottest team in the league for the last half or so of the season. We fell asleep vs New England, but had we won nobody would've wanted to play us. So...without the abuse of Reynaldo and Thompson, just how far is this team from being a serious contender?

we had the 32nd ranked defense in yardage, that definately needs to change before we're serious contenders. Our third down conversion rate was horrible (about 33%, good enough for 29th in the league) that needs to improve, that may happen with a healthy TE corps or we might need to get a good possession reciever (that's why I wouldn't mind Joe Horn for 1-2 years) We were also last in the league in time of possession, which goes along with the bad 3rd down conversion rate, we need to keep our defense off the field. Our D allowed too many big plays, we allowed 16 runs of over 20 yards (29th in the league) and 11 passes over 40 yards (27th in the league) those are just a few areas we need to drastically improve in before we're really serious contenders.

We're just going about free agency in different ways. Calm down.

I also believe the Niners had a worse record than we did. There are other FAs who can strengthen our team, and it appears they feel comfortable with some of the people currently on our roster and feel they will/could step into starter roles.

then they should have let them(tulloch, lowry/fuller and finnegan) play more so they would know instead of feeling.

Anyone who thinks we are close to contending just look at how we matched up to the Pats in the last game, look at what the Pats have done in FA and being able to franchise their best CB and consider the Pats have two first round picks.

    Feel better now?

Also, anyone making comments that we are building to be a contender for the "next decade" is nuts. With the exception of a few players possibly this team 10 years from now will not even be the same team. The future is almost always now in the NFL with the only exceptions being the QB position as one position that can remain constant for a decade or more.

we just got out of cap trouble. Reinfeldt was brought in to keep that from happening again. Don't expect us to throw all our money around in FA.
