40 yd dash is a joke. Do not understand why so much emphasis is placed on it vs. 10 yard dash, or even 5 yard dash. Burst is way more important than 40 yards of running, at every position, from WR, RB, to DT/G/T

Unless you are 2009 CJ, most players will rarely be running 40 yards, full speed ahead.

Take for example, D Heyward-Bey. great straight line runner.. bad hands and bad route running.

40 yd dash is a pretty horrible indicator of how they will pan out.

Why don't we care who is the record holder for the cone shuttle runs, or the short dashes? All of them are equally as pointless in judging who will be an impact player.

40's are only important to WR's and DB's, if a guy has a 4.5 or better he can recover or burn his opponent, no other area of the field is really open enough for a 40 to matter.

The important part of the play occurs about 10 out, not 40.

Disagree here, I think 40's are important for all positions. In the open field if you play defense it shows how fast you can get to someone, and it shows potential breakaway speed for all offensive players, something crucial in the draft, especially for playmakers. Even for offensive linemen, it potentially can mean how fast they can get to the second level, and could even be useful for kickers and punters to see how fast they could run on special teams for making those shoe string tackles. Granted it's not as important as actual reaction in a game, but it is impossible to try and mimic that sort of thing in the combine.

Yea but think about how far WR's end up running just to catch the ball 10-yards out? Its never a straight 10-yard line. If youre running a 10-y in route, you're running about twice that distance before you get the ball. Same for a bench route, out route, flag route, and any deep route

    40's do serve some purpose

Game speed is what Im looking for, 40's are nice to have, but timing, angels, and technique factor in much more than raw speed

well Im really just trying to point out explosiveness is what all these drills test. and that at certain times, WRs are running 40-yards. so to test a guy's 40's has a purpose, as do all of these drills
