Why we played our starters so long last night.

We were the only team in the NFL that played our starters through halftime in the 4th pre-season game. Why?

    Here's my theory.

Fisher saw last year how much can be achieved when a team believed in itself and willed itself to win. But this year the bar is set higher and the big picture certainly includes playoffs.

For this team to believe, we need to start fast. Our bye is at week 4 and if we go into our bye with a losing record, our momentum will be significantly disturbed.

Reminder - our first 3 games:

    Jacksonville in Jacksonville
    Indy at Home
New Orleans on Monday Night football

    Then the week off.

Fisher knows that if we go into our week off at 3-0, he will have a team (and a fan base) of true believers. I think we can do it.

Makes sense and we are notoriously slow starters (even in the early 2000s when we were good) maybe a change of 'tradition' will not let the team get complacent early on.
Hopefully this won't be the only thing Fisher changes to get this team going (like benching under-performing/non-performing players if there are any).

Though I don't think we will go 3 - 0 (two of those games are away), 2 - 1 is a very real possibility if we kick the slow starts.

I agree. I believe we can go 3-0. That will shock the league. Opinions would be totally different by the end of month one. We can only hope Fisher's alarm clock has gone off finally. I think getting these teams early can be a very good thing. Let's beat up the bullies first, and be in their heads the rest of the season.

And our offense needed to keep working - especially with Vince out the 1st game. They had 1 awful game, and then 1 good one... leaving them in last night gave them the chance to put 2 good games together (even if much was against 2rd stringers). Our 1st game might prove to be the toughest of the year - it's a big test against a team with a strong defense that we have looked terrible against, and it's on the road. If they can go down there with confidence, and pull off the upset it'll go a long way to playing with the big boys.

Very true. Win the first game, against the Jags - division rival, team that has given us problems - and confidence will be peaking around Mt Everest by the time the Colts arrive in Nashville.

Going 3 - 0 gives us the added advantage of two of those games being Division games which is almost a 2 game advantage on each team.

However, it was only pre-season and we have looked good against two teams predicted to not be very good so let's not get to ahead of ourselves.

    No kidding puck.

You guys are high if you think we are going 3-0. I'd be happy with 1-2. If we can, win 1 I think we make the playoffs. Those are three good teams. 3-0 would be like hitting the lottery.

Yea, looking at each game individually you could see how we could win any of them. We have played the Colts well recently, and they really got hit with key losses this offseason. Jags are the Jeckyll & Hyde of the NFL - could be either team that shows up. Saints have a questionable D, and look a lot like Indy has recently... high powered offense that maybe you can keep off the field. 3-0 is possible, but EVERYTHING would have to bounce the right way for us for all 3 teams to have their weaknesses exposed. I'll go so far as to say that 2-1 is a likely scenario - I think we might lose to the Jags, but beat Indy at home and NO in the Bush/Young MNF showdown. VY just seems to show up at the right time in those games. As long as we don't look silly in Jax, a loss won't hurt us. If we win strong there, sky's the limit.
