I like this plan. Wouldn't lose anything and could gain a ton
Stats aren't the only thing to evaluate in a players worth. Nate is worth every penny.
I agree with 615 nicks list minus Greene and add griffin.
It would be a big mistake to cut one of the only dependable players on our team, when we have so many who are NOT DEPENDABLE.
Nate had nearly 1000-yards this year, he's showing no signs of wear. And the work ethic and attitude he brings in unmatched, we'd be totally screwed if we cut him.
My cap casualties would be
RT Dave Stewart, cap savings of $6.4M
RB Chris Johnson, cap savings of $4M
MLB Moise Fokou, cap savings of $1.4M (worst graded MLB Ive ever seen)
LB/DE Kam Wimbley, cap savings of $2.4M (but in a 3-4 he may do alright, lets see if he'll restructure. When he played, he played pretty well, has a solid sack/play ratio)
Stevens and Fitz are also on my short list but replacing them wont be easy unless we use a draft pick on a TE and QB, not many worthwhile FA's at either position (no way we land Jimmy Graham)
All these guys are MUST GOs. Fokou is a joke, and McCarthy is done as an effective player, IMO. If we had viable alternatives, they should both hit the road.
Wimbley should be paying the franchise for 2014, for the gifted high salary they gave him the past few years. There is hardly a deal that he could restructure to, that would be fair. It's similar to a CJ situation. When you're owed way more than you're worth.. almost nobody will take the pride hit to take a 50 percent or more paycut.
He might take a pay cut. He signed that deal assuming he'd play 800 snaps, he played less than half that in 2013. He's also a smart guy, he has to know no one will pay him much in 2014
Most teams don't end up having to play their backups very often though... and most backups are terrible (worse than Fitz).
Backup QBs set to make more money in 2014 than Fitzpatrick:
There might be more, but those were the ones that popped into my head.
There are a lot of backup QBs who made more than Fitzpatrick in 2013 who are now free agents as well. There are also several guys I did not mention because they began the season as a starter (Gabbert, Weeden, Kolb, etc.)
$2.75mil really isn't that bad considering we know our backup needs to play at least half the season (sorry, Jake).
Please tell me how Craig Stevens will be hard to replace..he certainly isn't making the run game succeed lol
