what happened on the punt?

    The way I see it, it should have been considered a muff. The "fair catch" only allows the initial opportunity to catch the ball. After the ball makes contact with the returner, it should be fair game regardless of whether it's still in the air or hits the ground as long as the returner is not contacted by a player on the coverage team.

    According to Dean Look, the NFL observer who watched the game from the press box, a player that gives a signal for a fair catch "has the unhindered opportunity to catch the ball as long as it's in the air, within reason."

    "Within reason"? So if the ball bounced off the returner's helmet and went 10 yards in the air in any direction, this rule still applies as long as the returners has a reasonable chance to catch it before it hits the ground. If a coverage player gets in his way, then is he impeding a fair catch?

    Stooopid.
